  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

From the list above, which topics can be "joked" about between you and your spouse? Which ones are too offensive or too personal to be joked about?

By joke, I'm not meaning to say that you'd laugh at someone else's misfortune as a result of one or more of the above. But rather, to say that you're watching a stand-up comedy routine where the comedian makes light of one of the above subjects and one or both of you giggle at it. Or if during a conversation, a wife says, "Hey, you better start treating me better or else I might pack up and run off with your best friend! :p"

It depends on the joke to be honest.

Considering we both love Family Guy I guess we don't find too much offensive.
We love family guy, too! Jesse jokes about his girlfriends all the time. Not much that actually offends us when we joke.

I don't think either of us would be able to find humor in these, under any circumstances. That's not to say the others on the list are typical sources of humor in our life, it's just that I can imagine it happening, but the four listed above are a whole different order of magnitude.

Abortion would probably be a no for us. But other than that, depending on the joke, it shouldn't offend either of us. The reason why I single out abortion is that I can't for the life of me think of anything about abortion that could possibly be funny.

Not funny IMO are:
Domestic Abuse
Porn
Adultery
Abortion (but I can't think of a situation where this would be made into a joke in my life)
I've heard people make comments about messed up situations or something they think is ugly by calling it an abortion. I find it shocking and vulgar. If they're looking to get a chuckle out of me by using the word that way, they're going to be disappointed every time.

I've never heard that and can't say I'd sit quietly by if that was how they chose to describe an ugly situation. Heck, I'm not even comfortable that miscarriages are sometimes referred to as spontaneous abortions.

I see there are a lot of Family Guy fans here.

Anyone here familiar with Sarah Silverman's material?
Yeah we love Sarah Silverman. Jimmy Kimmel too. Oh, and Family Guy. And South Park.

We are probably some of the least offended Christians I know. I don't think we would find any of those subjects offensive if they were in the context of stand-up comedians, twisted humor, or the like. We might laugh and then say, "That's just wrong" but we'd still laugh if the joke was funny.

At first I was thinking of saying that not much offends us; we'll laugh at anything. But then I realized that there are actually topics we stay away from. We wouldn't joke about domestic abuse, as both our moms were beaten by our dads. Also, I wouldn't respond well to jokes about my weight, but my husband just instinctively knows not to go there, ever. I also don't think either one of us would ever make jokes about leaving the other. And joking about race is obnoxious and in poor taste. So I guess we're more uptight than I initially thought we were.

Neither one of us is offended by curse words though. I sometimes think there must be something wrong with me as a Christian for not being offended by "bad" words. All the other Christians I know (in real life) seem to be very offended by bad words. I personally find that most bad words (blasphemies excluded) can be humourous in the right context. Sorry if that makes me a bad Christian.
