  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So, I'm driving around the other day flipping through radio stations, when I come across a station playing Korn's version of Cameo's Word Up. It was extremely bizarre, as it wasn't very "Korn-ified;" they pretty much stayed true to the original.

So, I'm curious, can you think of any other odd cover tunes? The kind that make you ask, "why in the world is that artist performing this song?"

Okay...

I recently moved to France from the states, and right after I got here, I heard on French radio ... a happy-pop, female-vocaled, version of ACDC's "Highway to Hell." I didn't catch who the "artist" was, because I was LAUGHING OUT LOUD ...

so, sorry, can't give you the "band" for this VERY odd cover tune...

How about Johnny Cash covering a Trent Reznor song with "Hurt"? And that one was actually really awesome.
Johnny's last few CDs were full of songs you'd never expect from him. The one that contained "Hurt" also had Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," The Eagles' "Desperado," and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (that he did as a duet with Fiona Apple).

I did come up with something else that belongs on this list: Rob Zombie's cover of "Brick House."

There's a few I've heard:

Stabbing Westward's cover of "Bizzare Love Triangle"

Deadsy's cover of "Fox On The Run"

Kevin Oglivie's (I can't remember how to spell the name he goes under as a solo artist) cover of "Borderline" - this song is often credited to Skinny Puppy on P2P networks

KMFDM's versions of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" and "Material Girl"

That's a few I can think of at the moment. Strangely, all of them are Industrial covers. Hmmm.

Sometime in the late 80's, Crispin Glover(best known for playing George McFly in Back to the Future) put out an absolutely horrid CD that contained a cover of "These Boots." I thought it was gonna make my ears bleed! :D

yeah, that's a great cover... i'm listening to the cash version right now.

i work at tuesday morning. it's a little discount retail store, and they play the wierdest music. and alot of times, they'll play the original versions of songs that have been covered a million times. it's funny to actually hear the songwriter for once.... and many times, i didn't even know it was a cover.

Phish covering Deodato's funky "2001", which itself is a cover of (I think) Wagner's "Also Sprach Zarathustra."

Phish takes Ween's "Roses are Free" and actually makes a song out of it.

Phish also does a fantastic a capella "Freebird," its absolutely hilarious!
