• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Does OCD have to be because the person thinks that something bad will happen if they dont or do, do something?

Like can someone with OCD just do it and not really know why they do it, for example, washing hands, i know its because of germs but i dont actually think that i would get sick if i didnt wash them or that anything bad would happen... but i still feel like i need to wash them. Why would that be?

Also i have things that could be germy but i have deemed them ok to touch (like my cats). Some things im ok with that you would think i wouldnt be...

Any thoughts

Thanks :)

Most of the things I did I really had no idea why I was doing them. Mabey that is why it scared me so much. ThoughI did have some habits that I did because I thought something bad would happen if I didn't.

Yes. At the bottom of most OCD's is "FEAR". Fear of whatever you think might happen If you dont/do those things that you are obsessed about. But your mind could be O.K with somethings, like your cat, but not O.K with others things, like washing your hands. That could be because maybe you have understood that you could pick up germs from touching outside stuff and such instead of touching your cat, Which is generally true. It's good to wash hands when you touch stuff from outside home, but not to the point of obsession and too much.
