• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Can anyone explain the relationship between OCD and a gut feeling? Can OCD disguise itself as a gut feeling that you should do something? I’ve always struggled with decision-making, and i was wondering if anyone had any wisdom on this.

OCD is when you do something over and over without reason like before I go to bed I always go into the kitchen and stare at the notchs to the oven to make sure they are off for 8 seconds exact even though I know that they are not going to turn on and burn the house down

intution is when you do something that you know is the right thing to do without conscience thought

I think this is basically just another way that OCD is trying to make you confused. I agree with the commenter above - with intuition, you often just "know," but with OCD you worry and second guess. But of course there is not a distinct, black-and-white line between a healthy intuition and an obsessive urge, so sometimes we just have to make our best guess (although often, deep down inside, we do know that something is OCD - thanks to our intuition!!). It bothers those of us with OCD to think that there's NOT a distinct boundary for some things, and that sometimes there are gray areas and we do have to do the best we can - but part of overcoming OCD is learning to live with that uncertainty.

Incidentally, one strategy that has helped me experience some victory over OCD is to delay trying to figure out my obsessive issue, which OCD always tells me must be figured out RIGHT NOW. Sometimes I set a deadline - for example, "I'll worry about this again in a month, if I still feel the need to." OCD HATES this, but it's absolutely the best thing for it.
