• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Compulsivness can be mental as well :)
Especially in religious ocd. We mentally try to make sure we haven't done something against God.....over and over, after having the thought that we have done this terrible thing.

In germ OCD, the "making sure" is the hand washing. Germ thought = obsession. Washing = compulsion.

Hope that helps. :)

So..what determines what type of OCD you have (in reference to "germ" and "religious..") How would one go about figuring this out??
It is possible to have both, and other types, all at the same time. The best way to find out is from a psychiatrist.

Hi BreadAlone,
Ditto's to what JayAngel and Seajoy said.
Some Compulsions are outward activities such as checking locks, handwashing, etc. which the OCD'er does in order to get a temporary feeling of reassurance about the obsession.
Other compulsions are purely mental. They involve, mental debate, problem solving, reassurance/proof seeking etc. It all goes on in the head but it's done for the very same reason as the outward compulsions and that's to try and get some sort of temporary reassurance about the content of the obsession. I also think it's possible to have both forms of the disorder overlap in one individual.

So, an Obsession is what one goes over (usually repetitively) mentally, and Compulsions are the things done physical, typically driven by Obsessions..is this accurate?
