  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

According to The Oxford Dictionary Gluttony is:"habitual greed or excessive eating." With that being said, here are some statistics for you on this epidemic:

66% of Americans eat out.

Over 65% of Americans are obese.

Is this a coincidence? How many people can bench press their own weight? How man can actually walk a mile without running out of breath? I ask all these questions to both Christians and non-Christians alike. We bark about how homosexuality will destroy tradional marriage and rip our society apart, but I have seen that most homosexuals take care of themselves both physically and mentally. No, I'm not apologizing for what they do. I do think they deserve the same rights as everyone else. What I am pointing out is the fact that we have a far greater sin occuring in the U.S. and it has nothing to do wtih attraction to a particular sex. We are killing ourselves by eating ourselves to death.

Obesity is a terrible problem and I can't tell you how much it infuriates me and people allow their own tendencies to spill over to their pets (I work at a veterinary hospital). Yes, people are killing themselves, but to have a 40 pound dachshund is unexcusable....obesity has become a lifestyle in this country. There's also the unfortunate aspect of cost- with gas, heating, etc. going up...when you go to the store a bag of potato chips (or some other fatty food) is usually cheaper than a bag of apples (or some other healthy food). I'm a college student on an extremely tight budget and man, it's tempting to buy 25cent Ramen when it's much much more to buy veggies and fruits. I mean, I've gotta make rent and make sure I've got gas to get to work. As a society, we're not helping ourselves, either.

Yep, I totally agree! There is a problem with obesity in the USA. I know someone who is extremely overweight and has been for years. She is a nice person, but she doesn't help herself to lose the weight. She eats all the wrong foods (in my opinion) and doesn't exercise.

I think in general, a lot of us tend to be on the lazy side. I know I am. I would rather sit behind the computer all night instead of doing housework or exercising, etc. We have remote controlled TVs, DVD players, VCRs, and all other kinds of accessories to make our lives easier by not having to get up out of our seats. Pretty soon we'll be having robots deliver us dinner or something....LOL

I can tell you that a 10lb bag of protein and a gallon of skim milk could last you awhile and is very nutritous. It would cure sweet taste buds as well without the sugar content. It's appaling the way the U.S. is obese and we are "supposed" to be a Christian nation with values?

It certainly doesn't help at all how much we're brainwashed into equating food with happiness.
First a commercial telling you how wonderful you'll feel, stuffing yourself with burgers, And then a commercial for a pill to cure your morbid obesity sans exercise and healthy diet!

What a good thread! I can certainly see your point. I have been lucky enough to always be at an "in shape" weight. I do exercise everyday or every other day and I eat good food. I do eat out a lot and I also like to cook. But, I do not eat at fast food restaurants. We like good food and good wine.

I was brought up on a very balanced diet. My mom was very conscience about me eating good hearty food, and plenty of veggies. She wasn't one of those "weight conscience" moms, but she did not see fit for me to eat junk food very often. To this day she only cooks with REAL WHOLE food. None of the this frozen dinner, microwave junk, or meat from a can. She can't stand low fat stuff either. She says it's all fake junk that tastes horrible anyway. I agree and I eat whole food too. I think that has a lot to do with weight management. The low-fat craze has just gotten out of hand and it actually encourages obese people to eat more. And they are eating more synthetic, imitation food. I think that even if they were overweight, they would be a lot healthier if they ate WHOLE FOOD, no fast food, and no low fat, artificial mess... Just honest to goodness real food. Hey, then maybe they would have the energy to exercise.

Also I notice that a lot of mothers shove food into their infants mouth.. When they are crying, they give them food, when they are fussy, they give them food, when they are bored, they give them food. And it's usually some cookies or junk food. Then when that kid grows, and he or she feels anxious, sad, restless or bored they want food--usually not good food. It's ingrained.

I've got a question. What type of foods do they serve in the cafeteria at your school?(If your not homeschooling?) I only ask because of your age and it appears your either in high school or last year in junior high.

I'm extremely lucky that my kids take after my wife's genes(she's Japanese). My son is skinny as all heck and loves to play. He's 5 and currently taking Goju-kan Karate on Monday, Wednsday and Friday every week. As soon as my daughter is old enough, she's going to be enrolled in gymnastics.
