  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This statement reminds me of the old shampoo commercial which began with a model saying, "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful."

I used to see that on TV and think, "Believe me, that's not why I hate you."

I thought the same thing! I'd say to the TV commercial, "I don't hate you because you're beautiful. I hate you because you're conceited."

Your entire post is right on target!

Actually a "tenth of thousands people" would be 100 people. (that's 1,000 divided by 10) What you want would be "10's of thousands" or 10 x 1,000" see the difference? :)
tulc(you were close, darn close) ;)

You darn nit-pick!:p

I do.

But I love the fact that you can't explain why you like Obama. I can list many reason while I'll be voting for McCain. Typical.
1. Improving America's image abroad.
2. Ending the War in Iraq.
3. Refocusing on, finishing, and winning the war on terror in Afganistan.
4. Ending abuses of Executive power.
5. Stopping the torture of "enemy combatants" at Gitmo.
6. Appointing progressive judges.
7. Fighting climate change.
8. Rebuking No Child Left Behind.
9. Restraining big Oil and Pharmaceutical Companies.
10. Ending tax cuts for the rich and giving bigger tax cuts to the middle class.

These are just ten reasons that came to the top of my head. Do you want more reasons?

So putting your own country first is the same thing as wanting to put another country back to the stone age? Are you actually paying attention to the absurd things you're saying?

Exactly. Every country is looking after their own needs first.

I love America (I try and visit as often as possible). Yep there sure are parts I don't like but there are many parts I don't like of my own country. As a European most I know do not hate America. So many people have visited and loved the country. I don't know many who like GWB but I wouldn't take that as hating the country.

The US is not hated because it is big and powerful. It is hated because of the way it has worn its size and wielded its power. There is a long history of foreign policy that has led to enmity with some parts of the world. And the current administration with its bully boy tactics and neo-con imperialism has created a great deal of ill-will in the world and alienated some of our best allies.

To say "They hate us because we're big and powerful" is an oversimplification at best.

The world always hates the powerful, it is human nature. America is commonly blamed and hated by foreign governments.

If you want to call it absurd- that's fine, but it doesn't change reality. Other countries hate America. They would prefer us to be in the stone age. They do not have our national interests in mind.

They hate us, they want our country knocked down. They feel it is unfair that any nation should have so much power and wealth. There are a lot of Americans that feel the same way, and people like Obama and others in his party feel the same way.

There is a reason that leaders of Al-Qaeda and North Korea have all admitted that they prefer democrats in power. Europeans hate the Republicans because they refuse to turn America into the socialist waste land their continent has become. They want our economy to be sick and suffering like theirs. They want us to have a lower standard of living like theirs.

It is simple logic. There is no reason for a European, Arab or otherwise to like a presidental candidate unless they were going to weaken America. No citizen of any state wants another state to be more wealthy, more successful or more powerful. They want the opposite.

You think some German is going to like a guy that is going to bring in more jobs to our country? No! Do you think the French are going to want to give America more power globally? No! They don't have any of my interests in mind. They want a candidate that serves their interests.

Why would a foreign citizen want a candidate unless they were going to be detrimental to us? It's simple logic, simple reason.

Erm if our economy is sick and suffering then why is pretty much everyone I know taking advantage of the weak US dollar and going to America? And if we hate your country so much then why are we taking our tourist dollars and spending them like crazy there?

I gotta say I love the cheap shopping. Wanna go back soon.

p.s. I say weak because in 2002 I got $1.47 approx for every £1. Last year I was getting $2 for every £1 and last month it was a little less at $1.95 for every £2. Still pretty good though (for tourists going to the US anyway. Anyone going the other way not so much).

1. Improving America's image abroad.

= Weakening American's position around the world.

2. Ending the War in Iraq.
= Surrending to the terrorists in Iraq, causing a civil war that will end with Iran taking over.

3. Refocusing on, finishing, and winning the war on terror in Afganistan.
= Narrowing the war on terror. Looking for a quick fix to a serious global problem. This attitude was followed by Clinton, who did nothing about terrorism and ultimately led to 9/11

6. Appointing progressive judges.
= Getting people to legislate from the bench, well after Obama is no longer in the White House.

7. Fighting climate change.
= Destroying America's economy by global warming hysteria.

9. Restraining big Oil and Pharmaceutical Companies.
= Rising gas prices and stop drug innovation. Fewer new drugs mean people won't know what they are missing, and the government won't have to pay for research and development.

10. Ending tax cuts for the rich and giving bigger tax cuts to the middle class.
= No tax cuts for the middle class (which were given under bush, along with the lower class). Overburdening the upper class to stop investment and trash the economy.

Britain is a little different that Germany, France and others.

The lower value of the US dollar globally (things still cost the same here) was done by the Bush administration for precisely the reason you mentioned. It increases tourism and purchases from the US. Americans are more inclined to buy domestically and travel at home.

I don't necessarily agree with Bush's economic plan regarding the dollar- but what's done is done now.

You know, I was once asked to complete the sentence, "When it comes to politics, I...."

I completed it with:

When it comes to politics, I'd rather it didn't come to politics.

hmmm I don't know about hating America because "They're just jealous!!" it might be because they don't like having people starting wars that can be avoided for bogus reasons. I myself don't particularly care for that aspect of America. :sorry:
