That's exactly how many bushies defended iraq and afghanistan. It makes absolutely no sense for obama to get a prize on "Peace" while simultaneously escalating War.
As do I, and I would bet dollars to donuts as does Obama. But once again we have to be as careful getting out as careless we were getting in.Of course.
Not really. We need to stay out the nation building business. It just leaves us broke and left trying to get out of those situation with a saved face. To me like it or not the way Afghanistan ran by the Taliban (which we had no problem with prior to justifying the war) was probably the best it was going to get.Do you honestly think there is going to be peace in that region no matter what we do?
Well said!!
Except for the United States of Americans It's Americans or United States of America but not a combo.
It would be nice if the Nobel Comittee published criteria for winning the prize.
Just taking a broad guess, but since the existance of man there probably has never been such a thing as world peace, therefore it is probably bestowed on those people who make an effort or take action to foster an environment towards peace.
How do you engage in dipilomacy with people for whom the only acceptable outcome is your own non-existance?
And surely you aren't suggesting that diplomacy was not tried with Iraq are you?
KissingerConsidering that no political conservative ever wins this prize
Kim Jong Il has never won the NPP. Kim Dae Jung, of South Korea, however, has.Obama can now include himself in the company of Carter, Algore, Arafat and Kim Jong Il
"Good grief. No. No Diplomacy. None."
This is as wrong as wrong can be.
Thank you. The universal truth is that befouling one's own nest does not make oneself look one bit better in comparison; it just makes everyone look even worse than ever.
Oh noes! Not this one again.
Seriously.
Next, I'm trying to refer to the citizens of the United States of America as United Statesians and US-Americans.
Oh, what the heck: I'm just going to call you people yhdysvaltalaiset and be done with it.
As per Mr. Nobel's will, the Peace Prize is to be dedicated to, quote, "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
Apparently, President Obama was awarded the prize mostly on the first two accounts: fraternity and disarmanent: "...for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" and "...The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons."
In other words, for his vision of AND work for.
The Nobel Peace Prize is not a lifetime achievement kind of award.
Next up: the 2010 Oscars controversy, coming in March.

Come on RDN you know how it is, a democratic is in power now. WAR now means PEACE.
Sorry I'm late to the party; been out with the flu.
Considering that no political conservative ever wins this prize and the fact that Obama can now include himself in the company of Carter, Algore, Arafat and Kim Jong Il, I'd say it was probably appropo. My only concern is that I believe the Committee was sending a powerful message to Obama and basically trying to manipulate him into doing what they think is right; afterall, Obama hasn't really accomplished anything, yet. Clearly they knew they had a kindred spirit in Obama.
"Hours after winning a Nobel Peace Prize, President Barack Obama assembled his war council.
The president and his top national security advisers huddled for three hours in the Situation Room at the White House to talk about how many troops might be needed to right the Afghanistan conflict that military commanders are pressing him to escalate."
Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize, then huddles with war cabinet to send more troops to Afghanistan
"Initiated under the George W. Bush administration, Complex Modernization referred to by anti-nuclear activists as "the Bomb-plex" would "transform the plutonium and uranium manufacturing aspects of the complex into smaller and more efficient operations while maintaining the capabilities NNSA needs to perform its national security missions," according to a report by the NNSA in the Federal Register."
Obama asks world to reduce nuclear weapons while U.S. agency pushes new bomb production | Nation | NewJerseyNewsroom.com -- Your State. Your News.
Obushama set aside $55 million for that program.
If Bush had public speaking skills he would be Obama.
Although the committee has fairly strong reasoning, I think this was a political statement. Essentially, if anybody BUT Bush had been the last president, I doubt Obama would have gotten this. Compared to Bush, even Castro or Stalin might seem worthy
I think it's tragic if President Obama chooses the more ammos & bombs route. Don't expect me to defend him. You know me. As far as I am concerned, there is no difference between the US Democrats and US Republicans when it comes to foreign policy. And I dislike the nepotism shown to the killing machine business buddies that runs foreign policies.
I just think the guessing game as to why did President Obama win is an empty exercise, when Thorbjörn Jagland of the Committee said it clear enough: Obama gave the world back one vital commodity: hope. And now's the time to recognize what Obama brought to the table, because in 2013 it may already be too late.
Last year when career peacemaker & conflict resolver Martti Ahtisaari won the Nobel Peace Prize, the reaction was the same old same old: why did this guy win? What did he ever do for peace? And Mr. Ahtisaari is a man who has not started one single war but instead has devoted thirty years of his life finding solutions to wars and conflicts started by those who worship gun power!
I guess you could say that I have not lost my confidence in the prize itself and the Committee that hands it out; it's all these armchair commentator know-nothings that make my eyes roll.
Then again, the yearly waves it causes, the Nobel Peace Prize obviously still means something to a lot of people, or they wouldn't bother, which I guess is a positive thing.
