"But I tell you, do not swear at all... anything more comes from the evil one."
- Matthew 5:33,37

"But above all, my brothers, do not swear."
- James 5:12

Catholic baptismal promises:

Do you reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God's children?
Do you reject the glamor of evil, and refuse to be mastered by sin?
Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness?

Yet according to the world, these questions are meaningless. If the world
were asking us these questions, they would ask differently:

Do you swear to reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God's children?
Do you swear to reject the glamor of evil, and refuse to be mastered by sin?
Do you swear to reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness?

Men and women place their hands upon the bible, and take oaths they are
forbidden to take, swearing to perform duties they are forbidden to perform.

How can this be?

There are oaths and swearing that we take today. Has everybody forgot those vows we take at the altar when we get married?

Those are typical of "oaths" and "swearing".

The only time swearing or taking an oath is a sin is when you do not follow through, or it is taken in order to decieve.

God Himself "swore!"

"For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:" -Heb. 6:13-17 (KJV)

Jesus, when He was brought before the "high priests" was under an oath to tell the truth.

"And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven." -Mt. 26:62-64 (KJV)

Even the Apostle Paul swore or took oaths: (cf. Ac 18:18; Ro 1:9; 2 Co 1:23; 11:31)

Many time in the Old Testament, God Himself required people to swear, or take an oath: (cf. Ex 22:10-11; Nu 5:19-22; 6:2f; 30:2f; Psa. 15:1–4)

The bottom line is, do not swear or take an oath to anything unless you can fulfill you promise.

God Bless

Till all are one.
