What is the Catholic opinion the NRSV BIble (with Acroypha of course! )

Does it comply with Catholicism and Catholic doctrine? Or is it a little too ecumenical?

Not sure about Catholic perspective, but it's the only Bible that has been forbidden from liturgical use by the Orthodox Church in America (aside from all those crazy paraphrase Bibles, but it's assumed you will know better than to use them) because of the...ummm...progressive word choices.

I think a lot of folks confuse it with the RSV, which is a shame.

It's also the Bible that my prof uses in class as the academic standard. I'm not sure how universal that is, though.

but they only have a temporary indult to use it. They were granted that because a lectionary based on the NRSV was published prior to the CODF rejecting the NRSV for liturgical use.

I actually really like the NRSV- the inclusive language isn't very distracting, actually. A major drawback, however, is that the Apocrypha is all clumped together rather than properly placed throughout the Old Testament. I find it easy to read, but not dumbed down or devoid of meaning (which is my opinion of the NAB- at least before the latest revision).

A lot of picking a translation for personal use- is figuring out which issues of reading translated material are most important to you. Having studied ancient Greek- accuracy and faithfulness to the original language is important to me. To others, easy readability- or a mirroring of modern day language is most important. To others, a sense of poetry is most important.

I went to a really cool college where it was required (actually all classes were required- everyone studied the same thing!)!

We are very blessed- I studied GReek and my husband studied Latin!

I am taught latin by a lady who also teaches ancient Greek. They are also hobbies for her too I think. They are pretty cool in my opinion

Yesterday at my local "Books-A-Million" I picked up the New Jerusalem Bible, Saints Devotional Edition. I was looking for a nice hardcover Bible (since the cover on my NRSV is showing some wear). This particular edition of the NJB has articles on studying the bible and meditations on various passages of Scripture from many of the great Saints. The meditations include some passages from the Deuterocanonicals!

But what really hooked me in was the fact that among the saint "contributors" is my birthday patroness, St. Teresa of Avila.
