So, what books do you all have on your list right now that you've got to read.

One of my church elders (and mentors) is having me read "Putting the Amazing Back Into Grace" by Michael Horton.

Another mentor of mine has me reading Pink's "The Sovereignty of God." This one I REALLY like so far. Pink is a genious in my opinion, and God has really used him.

I'm reading "Debating Calvinism" because the same guy who wants me to read Pink's book says I need to read Dave Hunts arguments to see how irrational the arminian side of the argument can be. :p I also read it for my best friends sake, as she's an arminian and we're having some good talks as I try to persuade her of the doctrines of grace and I think this will help.

One of my pastors gave me a little tiny book called "Tulip" by Duane Spencer which is helpful talking to my friend because it's very basic and very scripture heavy. I recommend this book to all who have not read it.

I'm also reading Packer's intro to John Owens Death of Death. It's supposed to be almost as much a masterpiece as the book itself.

And, at my best friends behest, I'm going to be getting two books. "Captivating" and "Wild At Heart" about Biblical man and womanhood.

So I have a lot on my plate.

What do y'all have to read?

You do have a lot of books on your plate. That is a very Reformed situation to be in. Years ago I read John R. Rice's book Predestined to Hell? NO! for the same reason that you are reading Hunt's stuff.

I'm taking a break from theology and reading a book on WWII -- Armageddon : The Battle for Germany, 1944-1945 by Max Hastings. I've also started The Punic Wars by Adrian Goldsworthy and the Odyssey by Homer (No!--not Simpson^_^ ).

I plan to start back on Calvin's Institutes soon, and I have a whole bunch of Church fathers (38 volumes) waiting in the wings.

Coram Deo,
Kenith

Heady stuff there, heady stuff, but the very small portions I've read are good. I think when I've finished what I've got I may move on to the Puritans, Spurgeon, and Schaeffer.

Schaeffer was the first Reformed writer that I ever read. I love his work. Spurgeon too is good. I can recommend some really good books on the Puritans. Worldly Saints: The Puritans as the Really Were by Leland Ryken, A Quest for Godliness: The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life by J.I. Packer and the Puritan Family:Religion and Domestic Relations In Seventeenth Century New England by Edmond Morgan.

I have to take the Puritans in small doses, because even in small doses they are powerful.

In Christ,
Kenith

All very good books on the Puritans. Currently I'm taking the Puritans in one huge dose, in a class with Dr. Beeke on Puritan Theology. Some of the required reading primary sources for the class are "Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ" which is John Bunyan's exposition of John 6:37, "The Religious Affections" by Jonathan Edwards, and "The Forgiveness of Sin" John Owen's 430 page exposition of Psalm 130. Besides these I'm reading several secondary sources. It's a bit overwhelming, but I love the Puritans.

What is Saving Faith? by Gordon H. Clark. It's a single volume publication of his two books What is Faith? and The Johannine Logos. I finished What is Faith? and am halfway through The Johanine Logos. I'm also currently reading the Institutes through for the second time at work during breaks and lunch. I plan to finish What is Saving Faith? tonight and start on Trinity's new publication, Not What My Hands Have Done. It's another single volume, two book release, this one of Justification by Faith Alone by Charles Hodge, and The Everlasting Righteousness by Horatius Bonar. The Trinity Foundation is holding an essay contest about the book. They're even offering cash prizes of $3000, $2000, and $1000 for first, second, and third place, respectively. A podium finish would buy me quite a few books. :)

Soli Deo Gloria

It is. I would really like bunch of copies of Packer's intro to send to some friends of mine on campus.

What do y'all have to read?

I'm currently re-reading Owen's The Mortification of Sin and Tozer's The Pursuit of God. I am also working on Owen's The Death of Death in the Death of Christ, and Fred Reed's Nekkid in Austin: Drop Your Inner Child Down a Well. Next on my list is Keith Mathison's Given for You: Reclaiming Calvin's Doctrine of the Lord's Supper, which I ordered after finishing The Shape of Sola Scriptura, which I was impressed with. I've also got Murray Rothbard's What Has the Government Done to Our Money? sitting around. School is starting up again soon, so I'll be limited in my reading time, so I am trying to keep from having too many books to read that I won't want to do my work.

Dr. Horton was one of the first truly reformed speakers I ever heard - along with his mentor James Montgomery Boice. I've enjoyed everything I've read by Dr. Horton - and the one you reference is one of my favorites.

I'm being a little lazy with my reading right now - but am re-reading Sproul's "Grace Unknown" and MacArthur's "Ashamed of the Gospel." Nothing really heavy duty at present (I'm doing a lot of knitting and need lighter reading while I'm knitting - otherwise I can't concentrate on either the book or the knitting project).

So I have this problem, where I start and attempt to read more than one book at a time. If I can take a break from school and work, I am currently reading The South Was Right! by James and Walter Kennedy, The Attributes of God by AW Pink, and Vincent Cheung's Systematic Theology. When I am finished with those I will attempt to read Logic by Gordon Clark, the Johannine Logos also by Clark, Counted Righteous in Christ by John Piper, The Christ of the Covenants by O. Palmer Robertson, The Real Face of Atheism by Ravi Zacharias, and read various articles in the Complete Works of BB Warfield.

I had to do a double take here! I'm an elder at our church, and couple of weeks ago I loaned that book to my pastor!! I thought you had to be him!! I don't think the rest of the description fits, though. And I don't think my pastor would consider me a mentor.

I just got James Montgomery Boice's four volume commentary on Romans yesterday. WOO-HOOO!! Not only is it Reformed...it's also one of the most readable commentaries I've run across.

I'm finishing Sproul's Scripture Alone. I'm going to use his commentary in it on the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy for this week's adult Sunday School class on sola Scriptura.

When I want a break from theology...The Shipwreck of Their Hopes: The Battles for Chattanooga by Peter Cozzens. I had an ancestor who fought in the 33rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War and he was wounded at the Battle of Wauhatchie in this campaign.

I had several ancestors that fought for the Confederacy. I'm in the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), are you in the SUVCW (Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War)?

:p Not to mention I'm 17! HAHA!

I'd love to be a pastor someday though.

Any chance you're an anti-federalist?

I sided with Patrick Henry and George Mason at Virginia's Constitution ratification convention. I'm old, but not quite that old, however, I do think the anti-federalists like Henry and Mason have been proven by history to have been exactly right.

I've read a good bit of the founders' writings, and I am a strict (anti-14 Amendment) constructionist/Constitutionalist. I would also be willing to seceded from the Union (it is NOT indivisable) as soon as Louisiana elects a new governor.

 What's the problem with the 14th amendment? (Not trying to pick a fight...just really curious.)

I'd like Northern California to secede from Southern California!!

Would you be interested in taking a constitution discussion over to the history forum?
