Do a Bible search for "second death." Some people believe that the spirit dies like the body does, if it is not going to Heaven. The spirit death would be painful like a body death, but then it's over.

Sin is usually an offense against someone else. Whether it's God, neighbors, parents, authorities, strangers, or even yourself... it robs someone else of God's ideal for their lives.
If you have a friend who keeps borrowing your things without returning them, you would tend to allow it for a while, and then start setting limits. If the friend resorted to taking without asking, eventually it would be wise to stop spending time with them.
Sin has similarities to that -- it distances us from God and other people. It distances us from God's best for us.
Agree that sin, (not God) is the problem.
Yet, believe Scripture tells us that the "second death", is the death of the soul, not the spirit (don't believe the spirit can die, because it is a measure of God/God's Spirit/Spirit of Life.)
