Is there just a general style, or everything that comes from japan is officially called anime? I think there are some that actually have their own personal styles outside of this generalization-take One Piece for example....

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anime basically refers to japanese animation, no matter the style. It's a rather broad term, actually.

Anime is just the Japanese word for animation. People outside of Japan usually refer to anime as Japanese animation.
Myself, I prefer to use the term lightly. Anime doesn't cover collaborations between two foreign artists, or if a Japanese animator created a Tom and Jerry flick (that was true to it's original style), etc.
It's just a fan term, basically. Considering the amount and popularity of stuff coming from Japan, it's now wonder the foreign word stuck. Not that it's wrong to call Japanese work anime or manga, I do it all the time, but you don't read a comique and we don't watch animación...
I actually have a friend from Japan who was suprised to find that Anime and cartoons were split into two different sections.
From experience though, this discussion usually sparks some kinda pointless argument and what not...
