• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Not buying things from certain businesses (conviction vs OCD)

Hello,
So, lately I've been worried about getting things from a specific business (I'm not going to say which one, but I'm certain we've all heard of it). The business, like a LOT of major companies, to put it bluntly, does some unethical stuff, and promotes un-christianlike things. And I keep thinking I HAVE to NOT do business with them ever again.
But where to draw the line? If you research how many companies donated to Planned Parenthood, for example, the results would surprise you. They surprised me. So it doesn't make sense to me to pick and choose which businesses I support and which ones I don't, when, when it boils down to it, nearly ALL of them are problematic.
And yet I'm sitting here with bad anxiety and I'm in a terrible mood because this has been plaguing me pretty bad for a couple days. The recurring thought is "You MUST give up X company."

The stores want your money, which is why they have to ask for it in the form of advertising and sales pitches. That means you have a measure of power in your choice to boycott or patronize a store.

Obsessing over this turns that power dynamic on its head and crushes you. Don't obsess over this. You first priority should be to maintain your own health. If you can do that and also maintain a boycott for a well-defined reason, then great.

If you wanted to stop supporting every un-christian, unethical and anti-God industry...well, actually the only thing you can do is move out into the middle of nowhere and become a monk.

I'd try to just not worry about it so much, if I were you. You're burdening yourselves with the sins of someone else, and doing business with unsavory people is unavoidable in today's day and age.

Be practical about it. It's a good thing if you can direct your money to more godly - or less ungodly - merchants. But it's not always possible. Do what you can in good conscience, but draw the line at accepting stress about it.

I have that problem with a particular restaurant I order from. They refused to take precautions for covid. They also did some underhanded stuff my last order so I quit with them but I sure do miss their food besides being so disappointed in them for how little care they have for their patrons. And I wouldn't mind giving their name but it is unlikely it would be anyone here be affected by them.
To you I would say pick and choose carefully to keep the stress you are under in control. It does help and is a relief when you at least choose one and then after a while choose another to eliminate.
God Bless

never give the bad around the power to create more bad inside of you! This is what happens when you obsess about bad companies. To deny them your clientele is a good way to give clientele to those who are ethically sounder. It doesn't always work. Please don't fuss about that.

i always say do the best you can to support good and resist bad that is always good enough.

Peace.

I’m with you there. Just the other day (for a while even) I was afraid to wear my Vans hoodie because I didn’t want people to look at me and think “wow, he must be pro-LGBT and pro-abortion (because they’re based in California). I’m in the same boat, though I am wearing that hoodie right now. My counselor told me that in most cases, people will not make that assumption. And it’s certainly not my intention to promote such things. If I discovered that I was giving off that impression, then I think the best course of action for myself would be to consider a different article of clothing.

OCD intrusive thoughts are not real all you have to do is acknowledge the thought and to Cary on.

The only things you must obey are Jesus's commands and the laws of the land.
OCD intrusive thoughts do not have to be obeyed, so learn how to deal with them.
