• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Substance abuse has been a very big problem for my in my life. I have been sober, then use, then sober, then use again!

i started attending 12 step meetings when i was 15, so 3 years ago. They helped, but not that much.

Right now i am currently over 6 months clean.
and i did it without the 12 steps.

even tho i do not attend meetings, i still incorperate things that come from the steps in my life.

such as the serenity prayer, the 4th step, and looking for guidence for people that have been threw what i have and made it further.

so even tho the steps have helped my life tramedisly, i no longer attend meetings.

BUT I THANK EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED ME AT MEETINGS. SPONSORS, MENTORS, EVERYONE! GOD BLESS.

I had eight years sober, and stopped going to AA for three years, and ended up drinking. Then, I got six years sober, slacked off on my meetings, and picked up again. That relapse took two years, and was the worst time I had with alcohol. They say the disease is progressive, and gets worse over time, and in my case this is true.

I ended up in a psych ward, and then a rehab for two weeks. While in rehab, I realized that I had not completed all 12 Steps of AA. I always stopped working the Steps at Step 7. Plus, I had never worked the Steps with a sponsor. So, when I got out or rehab, I got to work with my sponsor, and got serious about Steps 8 and 9. I have completed all the Steps, and will be doing another 4th and 5th.

The beauty part of the 12 Steps is that they are rooted in Scripture, and help to bring about a Spiritual renewal in anyone who diligently works all of them consistently.

I hope you are able to experience total freedom from substance abuse, and the obsession to use. I had to surrender to God with the first 3 Steps in rehab to do that.

LindseyK:

Congrats! The 12 steps are not the ONLY way to soberity, but they are the most effective (100% for those who work them) method I know of. I can go long periods without a face/face meetings, but I can't make it anytie w/o the steps or the principles thereof.

Right now I'm a full time caregiver in a small town to my elderly parents and there are no f/f meetings, but there is an online community, & I still do readings and check in here & other sites to help me stay on the path.

It's like reading the Bible for me, Yeah I know the message, Yeah I can quote alot of scriture, but I still need to participate and renew my mind less I fall prey to old patterns and open doors I want to stay closed.

Keep in Touch-Again GFY on soberity!
