North American Union

After reading this thread, what does everyone think of the proposal of the North American Union? Cast your votes.

It'll never happen, but merging Canada and the US into one and Mexico, C. America and S. America into another would be more sane.

A union (as in cooperation between sovereign governments) for the purposes of free trade and free movement of people sounds fine. But to toy with US sovereignty by giving power up to some larger political entity? This is madness, and seems like some ploy for power. I oppose this just as I do one world government.

Maybe once we abolish the death penalty, provide medical care to all, stop discriminating over sexual orientation, invading other countries, imprisoning people indefinitely without charges, etc ... i.e. join the civilized world, something like this could start making sense.

for me it depends on the situation out of it arises.

Im just not sure. i dont know the situation over there too well.

id like to show my geekiness by saying a federation style one world goverment would be just fine! (in the end more than one world).

Perhaps so.

But despite all the America-bashing going on here -- admittedly some of it deserved, but mainly by George Bush, not America as such -- I think the American Constitution is not something to throw away too quickly, and I shudder to think what sort of mishmash would result from a new union.

Also, I wouldn't want to see American principles of freedom watered down (further!) by adding other cultures to the democratic process that may not share the same principles or values. I'm not suggesting that the American government as it stands is perfect, but what could result would not likely be ideal for America and would most likely become an eclectic mess.

I'm worried enough as it is over the European Union and what it may evolve into. I can't say that I've liked what I've read so far about what sort of governmental powers and structures were proposed not long ago.

I think it would be fine if world culture was more uniform (as it seems to be in the Star Trek universe), and if there was significant decentralization of governmental powers. Democracy seems strained to the limit, or even past the limit, as it is in a society only as large as the U.S. Can you imagine the scope that grassroots political reform movements would need if the entire world is involved? Governments that large could get away with anything for a long time before a worldwide political movement could achieve sufficient organization to mount a challenge.

Imagine if various cultures in distant parts of the world were to start pushing for laws restricting the freedom of women, and were making some good deals and compromises in World Parliament? How would one fight that at a grassroots level?
