  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It seems that the only kinds of books I read anymore are nonfiction.

I used to read a lot of fiction when I was a kid, yes, but then I kind of grew out of fairy tale stories. I mean, isn't 38 way too old to be believing in that stuff anymore?

I have a memory of being like, 9 at the library in Longview, WA, and I was relaxing in the children's section reading a fiction book called Reddy the Red Squirrel by Thorton W. Burgess (I was going through a phase where I was really crazy about squirrels and so I naturally chose to read that book). That book was so good I still remember it to this day. He is an underrated children's author in my opinion. I couldn't put his book down.

Something unusual about that library I remember is that they had bathtubs padded with carpet on the inside, and you could literally relax in the tubs and read their books while doing so! I even tried it and liked it! :O

On my desk right now by my computer I have three books about animals. Because I love animals. They are field guides. They tell me where different animals live. I guess they are science books?

Do you guys read any nonfiction?

I agree. I feel like I 'grew out of' fiction too.

Anytime I try to read it I just start thinking 'it's not real.' Even adult fiction stuff just doesn't interest me anymore.

When I used to like fiction, I didn't like it when people would tell me 'it's not real.' It's like 'I know that, but I like it anways.' If someone likes fiction, I wouldn't act like they don't know it's not real

But even back when I was younger, I still liked nonfiction too. I liked learning about animals too, for example.

Now I mostly read theology stuff. I like learning about church history, God, & the Bible.

It's funny growing out of things even as an adult, isn't it? Those bathtubs sound fun!

I like both fiction and non-fiction. I think you can learn a lot from both. For instance I just finished reading Life of Pi and rereading The Brothers Karamazov. While both these books are fiction, I think you can learn more about human nature and society from them, then by reading many non-fiction psychology/sociology books. Also some fictions books do an excellent job of explaining historical events. It's all enjoyable.

BTW the bathtubs sound great!

I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction. Some non-fiction books I enjoy are histories (Roman history from the Republic through the Byzantine period; Medieval histories, Norse history; Asian/Far-Eastern histories), philosophy, everything from the Greeks and Romans (Stoics being my favorite), Eastern philosophies, what some call "The Enlightenment" philosophers (Rousseau, Hobbs, Locke, etc.). Books science especially if they focus on space exploration.
