I'm the kind of person who loves to find rare music gems that you rarely, if ever, hear on the radio, but it's totally amazing!

The thing about those kinds of songs is that they're hard to find or come across.

Anyone here know of some songs? Maybe we can help each other discover some stuff! :D

You may find music like this on the radio, but not on mainstream stations.

10 Years - Wasteland - YouTube

Rise Against - Make It Stop (September's Children) - YouTube

Cage The Elephant - Shake Me Down - YouTube
That would require defining 'mainstream', 'cause our local Alternative station plays them. Which, I might add, has been one of the most prominent stations in the Tampa Bay area since it started broadcasting in 2000. The styles have shifted over the years, of course: 10 Years had their heyday ~2005/2006, Rise Against has been constant for nearly the entire time, Cage the Elephant is current enough.

I stopped listening to most of the current stations 6 or 7 years ago, since I got sick of all of heavy rotation and small number of artists/songs that get played (and I haven't been too enthused about the genres that have taken up mass popularity; 90s Post-Grunge is the only stuff within that genre that's actually worth listening to*, and I can't stand the indie folk hipster crap everybody was swooning over a few years ago...the pseudo-lo-fi stuff getting passed around now isn't much better).

*somewhat fittingly, 90s Post-Grunge (or heck, Grunge proper) is rarely played on the radio outside a few artists, and only a slight handful of their songs at that.

My general route of finding music is more through watching AMVs or through forum talk, hearing something in the background of a television program/movie, browsing iTunes' and Amazon's free offerings, or finding the occasional streaming radio station to listen to. The radio or MTV/VH1 play into it very little (because on a rare occasion they still do, like once every four or five months, if that).

My definition of mainstream music is those songs that everyone knows and are played most frequently on the radio, and concerts are held large venues like NBA arenas, football and baseball stadiums. Defining mainstream isn't clear cut. There's mainstream rap, mainstream country, mainstream pop, mainstream rock, etc.

Fair enough. To actually contribute some to the thread topic instead of just musing about my listening habits, a linked list:

The New Pornographers - Crash Years
The Last Dance - Nightmares
OSI - The Escape Artist
Project 86 - Molotov
Masayoshi Minoshima feat. Michiru Kaori - Nuclear Fusion
Masayoshi Minoshima feat. nomico - Bad Apple
Masayoshi Minoshima feat. Mei Ayakura - Plain Asia
Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets - YU-MU
SOUND+HOLIC feat. Aki - Dial Connected
Dead Artist Syndrome - Redemption
Cocktail Slippers - You Do Run*
Before Their Eyes - Sing To Me (small note: I am generally annoyed by the pop-punk vocal affectation style used here, but in this case it works)
Auxes - Radio Radio
Vitamin String Quartet - Through The Fire And Flames
Drew Copeland - Blame Myself**
Superdrag - Everything Will Be Made Right
Desoto Jones - Giant Magnets
Under Midnight - Fear and Trembling
Bettie Serveert - Deny All
Ayreon - Age Of Shadows
The Protomen - Light Up The Night

There's really way too much that I could list, so I'll stop myself here (I was largely focusing only on a single DVD-R's worth of music there, too).
