Sorry Virginia, we're not in Purgatory. You've got s whole lot of living before you're lucky enough to land there.

Continued below.

This world isn't Purgatory. But some people, the ones who go straight to Heaven at their death, in a sense did their Purgatory here. An example is the repentant one who was crucified with Jesus.

I suppose that to a certain extent, the fallen world in which we live is a kind of Purgatory. Some say that this world is Hell, but that is a bit of a stretch.
For some people this world is no doubt quite the Hell and it's not a stretch. It may not be "the" Hell, but it is comparable.

If you think anything on this earth can in any way be compared to eternal damnation, you really need to educate yourself.

Agreed. Even being an ISIS prisoner is not comparable.

Based on how purgatory has been described (i.e. excruciating), sometimes I wonder how we'd know whether we're in purgatory or hell. Is God going to tell us "hey you're going here" or are we just going to suddenly be in one place or another and feebly hope that it's the purgatory and we'll eventually be in the presence of the Lord?

That is a very interesting question Manwe. I have wondered the same. But I think we face God before going to purgatory don't we?

Right, we have our particular judgment. I suppose we'll be well-aware that we're suffering in purgatory (and not hell) and that there's hope to unite with Christ in heaven thereafter. As opposed to the hopelessness of never escaping hell.

That is my understanding of it. I
Think we will know where we deserve to go. At least some of the writings of the saints have pointed towards this understanding.

Other than Eden or the Promised Land before the fall, there has never been a place, with plenty of everything and freedom from oppression, more than what we have in present day America. No dictators putting ethnic groups to death, no one starving to death, pretty senery. Oh! my airconditioning is not working, this must be hell. I think we, Americans at least, have gotten a little bit soft on what hardship could be like, and has been like in the past under ruthless dictators and ruthless kings.

On the Spiritual side of things, with all the temptations, selfishness and demons on the loose to steal your soul, yes, this could be like hell.

I dreamed I went to Purgatory for 103 years, and Christ was there, disguised as the Angel in charge. Also, purgatory was different for different people, depending on your life.

No offense, but I don't put much stock in dreams. Coming from my protestant background where everything revolved around mercurial things that were easily influenced by anything from emotion to what you had for dinner, I'm not at all comfortable with people's dreams. That's a huge reason why I joined the Catholic Church, people around me were abusing the idea of dreams and visions and prophecy and all that to advance their own agendas and heretical beliefs. The Church, on the other hand, is rooted in the Tradition of Christ and apostles, ironclad and proven.

Again, no offense. I hate to use the buzzword "triggered" because it's so ridiculous these days, but if ever there were to be something that did that to me, it's the mentioning of any of those charismatic concepts. It's like PTSD or something.
