Being a christian is probably best defined by the Nicene Creed. There are two major sects of Islam, and each is defined by which textual authorities you accept.
I have a problem with the "No true scotsman" fallacy. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term - it refers to a fallacy wherein the object of debate is defined to suit the needs of the individual making the argument.
Most of the time I see the 'No True Scotsman' argument it is claiming someone never was a member of the group in question.
I object.
Being a chreistian is defined by Christ, in the bible. The Nicene creed defines catholicism, not christianity. The two overlap to the extent that they do.... some believe the nicene creed is 100% biblical and thus defines christianity. Others interpret the bible very differently.
^^ This. I see it like this:
Person A: no Christians ever committed murder
Person B: <names a few Christians who committed murder>
Person A: those weren't real Christians
Person B: <eye roll>
I have never read about the nicene creed in The Bible.
You have never read in the Bible that you should believe in one God who made heaven and earth, that Jesus is the son of God, that He was born to bring us salvation, that he was crucified, died and rose again? Really? Wow, you missed a LOT.
Surely you must be cutting out the catholic part if you are that confident. I have never read the word catholic mentioned in The Bible.
You are probably confused because nothing in my post referred to the acceptance (or not) of murder.
It's a lower case c for catholic. You do know that there is more than one meaning to that word, correct?
I'm quite positive everybody is confused with a post that suggests murder/is good or bad, and then a follow up post denying mention of murder.
No I got it. She was giving an example of someone using the No True Scotsman Fallacy.
A - Christians don't murder
B - Well here is a Christian who murdered someone
A - Well that person was not a Christian.
Person A is using the No True Scotsman Fallacy
I'm quite positive everybody is confused with a post that suggests murder/is good or bad, and then a follow up post denying mention of murder.
