With the publication of new regulations, Pope Francis has made it clear that employees of the Fabric of St. Peter must profess the Catholic faith, wear decent and appropriate clothing, and not have visible tattoos or piercings, among other requirements.

The Office of the Holy See has published a chirograph of Pope Francis on the Statute and Regulations of the Chapter of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, which determines the norms for the staff of the Fabric of St. Peter, the entity responsible for the conservation and maintenance of St. Peter’s Basilica. A chirograph is an order signed by the pope.

All employees must comply, including the so-called “sampietrini,” those in charge of admittance, surveillance, cleaning, and maintenance of the Vatican basilica.

The document, published on June 29, establishes that employees must “take care of their outward appearance in accordance with the demands and customs of the work environment.”

The Holy Father thus determined that “visible tattoos on the skin and piercings are prohibited.” Likewise, employees must “wear decent clothing appropriate to the activity they are going to perform.”

What about for Christians who have turned away from tattoos, but can not afford tattoo removal? Will the Vatican cover the cost of removing tats? Luckily, I have no tats or piercings, and will never get any of those, but this is a little harsh.

The reference to "visible tattoos" indicates to me that you can have a tattoo as long as you cover it up with clothes. Not sure how someone could do that if it's on their face, though. On the other hand, tattoos on the face are generally pretty uncommon.

I've seen them from time to time with customers at work. I always think that person as "tough" and not someone who wants to be messed with. Looks can be deceiving though.

I don't understand why someone would want to get a tattoo on their face because you really can't hide it. It's essentially stating Look at me! Look at me! IDK.

I used some of that before my daughter’s wedding and it didn’t work very well. The tattoo was still visible and it looked like I was wearing makeup on my arm.

It’s a code of confidentiality in accordance with Canon Law.

It turns out, however, that the pontiff’s seemingly benign view of tattoos doesn’t extend to his own workforce in the Vatican. New rules for employees of St. Peter’s Basilica issued June 29 specify that personnel may not have visible tattoos or piercings, and theoretically could be suspended if they do.

The new provisions were part of a twin set of new statutes released on Saturday, which the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul, one governing the Fabbrica di San Pietro, meaning the administration of the basilica, and the other its “chapter,” referring to a body of retired priests who assist in liturgical and sacramental life.

I am not a theologian, but no one will locked out of heaven for having a tattoo, though the Bible does say one must not get markings on their skin. God has so many rules, it is not even funny, but it goes to show how we must strive to live a blameless life and how we need Jesus to cleanse of of our sins. Luckily, I will never get a tattoo.

Leviticus 19:28 (NIV): "Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord."

Yeah I don’t think the pope is calling tattoos an exclusion to Heaven. He just seems to think they are not professional looking in that work environment.
