But the fear of hell drove a little child and his parents away?
Where IS the balance but in preaching THE POWER of THE CROSS
Totally agree !!HI solomons porch,
The teaching of hell is an integral part of learning the truth of the reality of this life. However, I believe that in our teaching of anything of the Scriptures we need to try, as best we can, to follow the examples of Jesus and Paul and the other apostolic teachers of the new covenant Scriptures. We should teach with an attitude of love and compassion for those who are hearing our words.
But yes, we have become that which the Scriptures tell us that we will become. A people who want to fill our itching ears with those things which please us to hear. I believe that in our seeking a place of worship that we should strive to find such a place where the teacher does teach the truth. If what is being taught is the truth, but seems uncomfortable to our ears, then there is likely a very good reason for that. This brings us to a crossroads. We can choose to turn away from such teaching, as many did one day when Jesus was teaching a particularly hard truth, and find somewhere else to worship that makes our itching ears more comfortable. Or, we can allow the conviction that we experience to change us and continue to mold us into the kind of person that God wants us to become.
Jesus and many of the first apostles often spoke of hell in their teaching. So, for someone to leave a fellowship because the teacher speaks of hell, or for someone to try and deny that such a place as hell isn't a part of the reality of this life, is, in my opinion, a poor choice to make at such a crossroad. For us to think and consider that such teaching might scare children or grown ups and, therefore, not be taught, doesn't seem to follow the Scriptural examples that we have either. We know for a fact that there was at least one young boy in attendance at one of Jesus' teachings who brought a lunch of a few loaves and fishes.
For us to likewise believe that the teaching of hell only scares people into accepting the love and mercy of our God, Father and Creator and should, therefore not be taught because that isn't why God wants us to believe in Him. Also doesn't seem to follow the example of the Scriptures. I believe that God does want us to understand the consequences of our choosing. In giving the law unto Israel, God laid out clearly and plainly the consequences of both obedience and disobedience. He doesn't seem to have pulled any punches and left it to them to only choose to follow Him because of all the good things that would be their's through obedience. He clearly let them know of all the bad things that would be their's through their disobedience. I likewise, don't believe that God only wants us to teach others only about the good things that are their's through obedience to Him today.
We are to teach the whole truth of the Scriptures to those who are working to mature in their faith. Just as when Jesus taught before the people of Israel as he journeyed throughout the land of Israel, some who came to hear him may have already believed in him and were there to learn more of what he taught as the truth. To mature in their faith. Many, however, were likely just first time attenders who had come out to listen because they were curious about this man who claimed to be the Son of their God. This man who was claiming to have come from God to teach them about their God.
God bless you,
In Christ, ted
Here lately I have wondered why I do not hear ANY sermons preached on hell. I grew up Pentecostal and all those years I would hear preaching on hell fire, repent and give your life to Christ. Many times I saw the Holy Spirit convict people during these sermons and they would practically run to the altar. It seems here lately and has been happening for years now that preachers no longer preach on this matter. Why has everything turned into a pretty package, tickle your ears service?? Why have we strayed away from this? The preacher used to pour out his heart to the congregation, pleading the case of Jesus to turn from the wickedness of this world for there is a heaven and there is a hell, choose today who you will serve, repent for the time is drawing near. What happened to this teaching and preaching, it seems it has all but vanished
Amen yes he was.....

You preaching the truth now!!I agree, but this is a good question. I find that it is a problem not only in our Churches but in America itself. We are seeing a very immature generation, a generation who's number 1 concern is not to offend or be offended by anyone. The Church is trying to play to the safe zone generation. Where are the strong Christians? Where is the message of the gospel in its entirety? We MUST WAKE UP! I have fought Demons and struggled with sin. We are at WAR it is not all sunshine and roses, it is grit, it is pain, it is sorrow, and persevering against the world itself. I must call it what it is even if it hurts, or the enemy will win.
I absorbed plenty of it as a kid. Don't go to the same sorts of services now, so I can't tell if it's the same. But I believe it.
Maybe preachers feel like life is tough enough now without threats of hell every week?
I don't know what the sermons were like but did they sound like the GOSPEL (GOOD NEWS of JESUS CHRIST and THE MESSAGE of THE CROSS)
Do you think the people came to to CHRIST out of fear of hell
Or because they understood the prick to the heart unfathomable gift of GOD's LOVE and MERCY and GRACE in HIS SON?

YES and these people that keep claiming the VERY DATE that Christ is returning is making all those unbelievers doubt. The false prophets ,teachers and preachers are wreaking havoc. They are amoungst us and the true believers need to stand and rise up.Unfortunately, false teachers are rife through the church who only want to preach the feel good aspects of the Bible, and refuse to preach the whole counsel of God.
Yes because they did not believe the Kingdom of GOD was upon them and instead of entering in they interfered and prevented those who wanted to enter in through THE DOOR from entering in
You preaching the truth now!!
Turn the news on, you can see what we have done.
Lets go get the paci's and diapers, cause these babies need love.
Look what that kinda love did.
Amen yes they are, those days have vanished. It truly makes me sad. I also as a child did what you did, and honey when I got thru crying and cleansing my dirty soul, i got up off my knees and felt white as snow.Yeah I know what you mean. Things are a lot different now. I remember at the early age of about 5, fearing hell and hell fire to death! We called them, fire and brimstone messages. I use to start crying as soon as I entered the church and would have to run to the alter, and pour my heart out for the whole service. "Save me Lord", I dont want to burn in hell forever, Im only 5!" The adult use to tell us, hell was "Ten times hotter than the fire on the stove" Use to relate it to the fire that burnt the guards when they tried to put the three guys in the furnace....you know....Shadrach, Mishach and a Billy-goat? now what did the poor goat do to deserve that....remember, i was young...but it was ok...they made it out.
I would hear the message, and cry like i've been beat with a stick for hours........run to the alter.....and couldnt even form words because i was crying to hard. This continued till after I got "saved" Yes, I didnt have to cry and run to the alter anymore......but salvation was conditional so the fear of going to hell was still there.. So the first thing i ask God for...was death! Yeah these messages gave me the fear of God and the desire to get saved.....and then after i was, I felt It would be good to die then, lest I sin later and end up in the same Hell I just avoided...
Yeah those were the good old days.
you see, this fear was my God. I was worshiping the Devil and Hell and fear....and not even thinking about Love, God and heaven.. I didnt even care about heaven....I just wanted to avoid hell. Im going to be in a golden gated community in a mansion, and will have to stay there forever? OK at least im not being burnt.
This fear keeps people in line.......keeps them following the leader......even if the leader is walking around in a desert for 40 years! Took me 30 years to stop following the leaders and seek and follow God........to be continued...
Blessings in Christ Jesus. Most (not all) of todays preacher preach out of the power of there own minds. They prepare their sermons beforehand and then bring that on Sunday mornings. When one of the Lords preaches He needs only to have faith. Faith that His Father will give him what he needs at that very moment. And The Lord is faithfull to provide. Only The Lord Knows what is needed at that very moment and The Word will flow out like a river in perfect balance, for it will be not be that man speaking but Jesus through him. It is He who gives you the seasons, It is He who gives you the night and the day and only He knows when to talk about the night or the day. Here lately I have wondered why I do not hear ANY sermons preached on hell. Many have a hard time defending against people who have very valid questions about it (hell) like why A God of love would send people to hell for infinite torment, for finite, often done in ignorance, behavior or sins...Here lately I have wondered why I do not hear ANY sermons preached on hell.
