We have seen the fruits of debating. And frankly, debate is not necessary when all agree on what they believe and have no intention of trying to impose views on each other that are contrary to how each one thinks.

In essence, that is what debate is all about. That is, it is a method to impose a view on someone else to get that person to change the way he thinks about something. It usually results in someone being made a fool of publicly, or a flaming fest.

Discussion is different however. We can discuss things without arguing with each other or trying to make each other think as we want them to.

So here is what I propose: The word, 'debate' should not even appear in this forum as an option, but what should take place in here is civil discussion.

The Bible makes it very clear that debate is something that is frowned upon by God. So why are we letting it happen in here? We need to start doing things God's way, and stop making excuses for not doing things His way, such as "debate is good because it helps people to grow in their understanding of xyz..." If ever there was a lame excuse to justify something surely this is it!

Listen, you don't need to argue with people to grow in understanding what you believe. You just simply need to study more and more! And you can also learn new things by engaging in a civil discussion on the matter. But arguing about what each other believes is actually counterproductive to growth in Christ. Indeed you may gain further understanding because you are forced to think about something in more depth and thus spend more time studying it. But what often ends up happening is people flame each other and enemies are made. So you grow in your understanding ; yet, you fall behind when it comes to growth of character in Christ.

Again, you don't need to argue with people to gain knowledge. You simply need to study more...

So I think it would be best to have a discussion area; but the word debate should have no part of this forum, as it is no longer necessary, or something that God favors...

If you were to study the Spirit of Prophecy, you would find Ellen White saying that loud and boorish detractors against truth have to be met but that nothing good comes from discussion. So you have it backwards.

We have seen the fruits of debating.

I've even seen the fulfillment of prophecy. I post God's truth, which is often hard-hitting, and detractors immediately go complain to the Catholics to try to suppress the proclamation of it.

No. I don't have it backwards, because I only need to follow the example of Jesus who didn't argue with people about doctrine, but lived the righteous life!

Jesus ... didn't argue with people about doctrine

It is generally true that Jesus didn't argue with people about doctrine. What he often did was deliver such a severe knockout punch to all the hypocritically evil religious leaders that clothed themselves with pretense and sanctity that they immediately ran away to conspire how they could destroy his influence.

"His days were passed in ministry to the crowds that pressed upon Him, and in unveiling the treacherous sophistry of the rabbis." MB 102.

The only difference being that during that time the religious leaders at least had the common sense to shut up when refuted by a good dose of logic.

The problem with many people today is that they just don't want to be reasonable by any means. It doesn't matter how good the logic is, they will have no part of it. Thus there is no sense in arguing with them; but it makes perfect sense to obey Jesus' words in Matt. 7:6.

Matthew 7:6
“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.” (New International Version)

Your use of this verse is hilarious because it’s exactly what the hierarchy of the Seventh-day Adventist church thinks of faithful Seventh-day Adventists. How else could they possibly justify having those church members that refuse to submit to church taught spiritualism arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law and use the wonderfully hypocritical pretense that they are on church property? The legal charge that Adventist pastors use is called criminal trespassing.

That's obviously false. The Spirit of Prophecy makes it clear that the remnant church has been called to go through an experience similar to that of the Jews in the first century. So there is no essential difference.

Bourbaki, why don't we just spend our time at church by letting people come in and bully us there too?

It will be nice to enjoy this forum and grow in our faiths. Some people are not going to agree about everything, but by golly, if they want to debate there are PLENTY of places here on CF to do that.

I like it like this, but I do seek out debate in other places sometimes.

I'm really looking for a peaceful Sabbath here!

One rule you can always count on: never, ever trust the critics on anything.

But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord?” Acts 13:9-10 (New American Standard Bible).
