No original bibles have survived to modern times, and that translation issue you brought up doesn't help matters. Some stuff in the bible is demonstrably wrong. Rabbits do not chew their cud. You cannot get striped goats from patternless ones by forcing those goats to mate while looking at branches. Pi does not equal 3. Yet, according to the bible, all of those things are true, despite the fact that reality doesn't reflect that. Furthermore, how much interpretive room is there for numbers? Aside from the 40 days thing being an ancient idiom meaning "a very long time", a numerical amount stated in the bible is unlikely to be nonliteral. The problem there is that you have now placed the
bible into the realm where anything can be wrong.
In my scenario, the original is correct as is. Only
the way that one word is interpreted is incorrect.
Did you know there are about 25 words in the Hebrew
Scriptures that nobody knows what they mean?
They have guessed using similar word roots, but
that is a long way from knowing the words.
