  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I would love to go dancing with my husband (if we were 20 years younger) but I cannot find an alcohol free place to go. Then there is the problem of music. I don't like much of it.

The last time we went dancing was before I rededicated my life to Christ. Even then I was unimpressed at the sexual undertones at a local Boy Scout fundraiser dance.
If it's just the dancing you want, why not try taking some dance lessons with your husband. It might be something fun you can do as a date night.

Just a thought.
There are no problem just solutions waiting to happen.

My husband's words would be, "I'm too old for that!" ^_^

The only dance classes available where we live is at bars. We live out in the country.

I'm a baptist and I dance!

Baptists WERE against dancing. In fact, years ago it was a huge deal for a local well known Baptist college near me William Jewell (I will be attending to complete my degrees) to start to allow it. If I remember correctly, when my husband and I were married, our SBC church of thousands made us agree there would be no dancing or alcohol at the reception if we to marry there. This included even outside halls, or home setting. (We found our way around that!) I have been a dancer since I was five. I danced publicly/professionally for many years as a child. (Not stripping, but modern dance for our city’s lyric) We just tried to keep that under wraps. Personally, I disagree with this mandate (if it is still in the bylaws) but not all Baptist denominations are as strict. There are many "versions" of the Baptist Faith. They are sort of like Catholics, only not all under the same umbrella. Unless they are SBC ;)

I think it is just another way that some believe keeps us from opening ourselves to "sin". Most dancing now a days is to hip hop etc.. With that comes an attitude that they feel may "relax" someone in their walk. Meaning, it might become easy to act in an inappropriate way. I am much more liberal in this that I believe intent is really what is at the heart of the matter. We should be able to use and enjoy our God given gifts. If they are squelched, then we will never know how to appropriately use these gifts, and not know how to act in a healthy manner. IMHCO

Actually, I wouldn't discount doing that too quickly, I almost did. I learned a lot of new country dances at the bar. (we live in the "country" too) We went as a family every Thursday night. It was great fun and became a memorable event for my family. I have met tons of people; in fact, it became a great witness to others. Many people think that Baptists (Christians) don't drink, smoke, or dance so they avoid church or any type of "Christian" activity. It is amazing how many people I run into that think this. When they realized that that is not the point, some have started attending the church. Not to say you should go drink, smoke and grind. Just saying there might be a family night at one of these places, it really was better for us than I imagined. God just might have work for you there too!

I need to stay out of drinking environments. I can't even walk by the liquor store without gagging. I am allergic to anything fermented. At least with yeast and vinegars I only get a rash when I consume them.

I attended a family dance in Alberta once when I was about 14. It was great! There were great-grandparents doing the two-step and playpens lining one wall. Only once have I found a dance like that in BC. My granddaughter and I won hats in a spot dance.

There is scriptural backing for dancing

Jesus said Himself "I am come that you might have life and have it in a barn dance";)

:sorry: :sorry: :sorry:

Seriously, as probably the worlds worst dancer (2 left feet would constitute a huge improvement for me) any ban on dancing would have to be good news for me personally:)

And for anyone asking the perfectly reasonable question of "Whats that looney Salvationists doing in here again?", my partner and I are seriously considering attending the baptist church close to our home.

So, you guys could be seeing a great deal more of me

Sorry....:sorry: :sorry: :sorry: :sorry:

Well then of course you should not attend the dance lessons there! It really is great fun to learn line dancing; too bad they don't do this as a family activity thorough the church members. Families that play together, stay together! ;) My children had a chance to see me screw up, and work towards getting better at the same task they were learning. It was a bonding experience. (The dance lessons were prior to “bar opening” so there wasn’t any alcohol consumed. It was strictly a family event; alcohol could not be served –no license to do so with children on the premises--)

God likes dancing and that is one of the things that he loved about David.

I was always told that we didn't smoke, drink, dance, etc. because it could lead to great sin. Gimme a break  I do remember when Baylor announced that they were going to have dances that created some controversy and generated headlines ^_^

I've not known Baptists in general to be the ones who don't dance. I thought it was the very fundamentalist sects and Mormons/JWs.
My SIL is Mormon and when her daughter got married they held a dance in the basement of their.... hmmmm... I think they call it temple. We were not allowed to go to the wedding though.

Well I'm Baptist - and I danced like a fool first when Auburn spanked Florida, then when LSU spanked em, and then this week when the looser gators dropped out of the top ten in the polls.... Though how they are still ranked I have no idea...
