• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Once again I'm awake in the wee hours because of nightmares. They haunt me more nights than not for some reason. I guess it's my mind's way of trying to wrap itself around the abuse or to process the ptsd symptoms or something. Either way, I'm extremely tired and sleep deprived at this point.

Your prayers would be appreciated greatly.

Hi Kristen,
If I'm awakened by nightmares, I often will pray the Rosary--- something about holding those beads and knowing the prayers and mysteries of Christ so well its very comforting-- or I like to open up Psalms and read each one until I'm sleepy again and calmed. Anything to bring me closer to Christ and know that whatever I dreamt can not harm me.

May the Lord bless you with sound rest

Thanks. Sometimes I sleep with my grounding beads on, but I don't always remember to use them when I wake up. I should write out some Psalms to help with calming. Great ideas!

Therapy include a glass of milk and turkey sandwidge...

A vitamin like 5 mg of melatonin wont hurt the sleep either!

Hmm... I'd think eating would wake me up, but then again, turkey tends to put people to sleep. I might have to try that. :D

I also want to voice that taking melatonin is great! I take 6mg of it most nights (nights where I have work in the morning-- so I don't stay up all night thinking about work stuff) and it helps me to stay asleep throughout the whole night. What a blessing that substance has been to me. :) And since its the same substance that our body makes to help us fall asleep and stay asleep, I haven't had to worry about any side effects (I do get a small headache sometimes if I try to stay awake after taking it, but it goes away once I lay down to sleep).

I hear you. This part of recovery can be difficult because the lack of sleep can not only affect our frustration and emotions but our health as well. I don't know if this will help but I use to (still do) have 'plans' in place for difficult times when difficult emotions came. If, for example, these feelings came at night when I was alone and couldn't speak to anyone, I'd have a journal by my bed I could write about my feelings in. I'd also have music that comforted me sitting beside the bed on my ipod or a picture that reminded me of comfort, etc. I also had plans in place for when I went out and saw difficult people or had difficult tasks. e.g. pre-prepared statements / replies for prying questions or peoples stupid comments; a stone in my pocket that said comfort, peace, etc; a little business card sized written affirmation; preplanned self-talk e.g. "I'm okay". I tried to be creative according to my needs. But yes, night time can be hard when we are alone and there is no distraction; it's just us and our feelings and memories. I'd keep written posters or affirmations posted in my home and music that reminded me God is here with me even though I'm struggling to feel His presence or understand why, etc. I kept reminding myself of scripture stories and my own life stories that exemplified that God's motives are pure. e.g. Joseph, David, woman at the well ...even though the shame belongs with the abuser my unnecessary feeling of shame doesn't stop God from loving me.

You're in my prayers.
