  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've got a quick question of the Nicene Creed. In the church that I am currently attending, whenever we say the part "By the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the virgin Mary, and became man," the entire congregation bows their heads. We never did that in my previous church, so I was just kind of wondering why this is done. Do you do this at your church?

In my missal, it says 'Bow here' so I do. I think me and one priest are the only ones that do :sorry:

In former times, Catholics knelt when they came to that line.

Why? Because it refers to the miracle of the Incarnation which is our salvation and sanctification.

At the TLM, we genuflect with the priest and kneel as the choir sings et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto ex Maria Virgine et homo factus est.

At the NO, one is supposed to bow, and genuflect at Christmas. Growing up, I remember the missalette saying to bow, but nobody ever did. At the few new Masses I've been to with the Credo, I don't remember any bowing, although the genuflection was mentioned (and done) at Christmas Mass at Midnight last year.

Yes, you are supposed to bow there. The new GIRM says to bow then. (And on March 25th and December 25th, you are supposed to genuflect/kneel.) Up until the new GIRM came out, my pastor didn't bow, then he did for a few weeks, then lapsed back into his old way. I wish that he'd bow, not only because he should, but because :::confession time::: I normally look to the priest to know what posture is expected of me and I would appreciate that ease of "following the leader". Actually, the only time it is noticed is when another priest concelebrates with him. One bows while the other doesn't.

Yup- we bow. Except at school almost no one else does- but hey we do a lot of stuff at Mass no one else does- like keep our hands folded, thumbs crossed, while we stand....

We also genuflect when saying the Angelus when we get to "The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us"- for the same reason- that we are referring to the Incarnation....

I also strike my chest during the "Through my own fault" I think that is the Mea culpa Mea Maxima Culpa.

Yup - do that one, too! If only everyone would actually follow the directions in the missalette they are buried in for most of the Mass!
I understand why one needs a missal if the Mass is in Latin- but why when it is in the vernacular??

Do you know of any good places to find information off the top of your head?
I'm actually working on a synthesis paper about this right now. I could send it to you when I'm finished, hopefully within the next couple of days. Otherwise, there are lots of good sources - if you can get your hands on Early Christian Doctrines by J.N.D. Kelly, that's a classic.

How many stay to sing the whole hymn at the end of Mass, even though you know the people next to you would scurry out of their pew if you moved out of the way. :holy:
That's us, too- and then we stay to make our thanksgiving- though my kids are usually running up to say their prayers in front of the tabernacle....

Don't strike my breast at the elevations, because it's not in the rubrics- I figure if I'm gonna try to combat all of the abuses at my parish I need to be squeaky clean- so to speak! ;)

LOL. i dont like when people leave early after communion. I feel so guilty when i have to do that and leave right after, but only because i would be late for work! So really im a hypocrite ;)
 Usually if people have to leave they'll just ask if they can scoot by and I don't give dirty looks or anything, I promise :) .

The only time I've given a dirty look to anyone was a teenager who talked..no gossipped through half of the Mass right behind me, at least she could have tried to whisper.

Everybody at my church stays until the last note of the final hymn is sung. It's great to see.

People know how weird I am and I don't care.

In the new translation of the Mass, the mea culpa's are to be restored to the Mass.

I strike my breast 3x when I say "My Lord and My God" at the Consecration. Ps139 & PP's Canon Police turn the other way when they see this.
