  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Cannot get the NiC card to work. Have tried different slots, tried different cards. PC recognizes it, but no signal is getting to or from the card. Suggestions please.

1). is the light on the NIC card on? when you have it in, and have the PC plugged in, the light on the card should blink.

2). Have you installed the drivers for the card?

Light is on... drivers installed

Win 98, AMD Thunderbird 900, 512 ram, just using normal cables, yes on router, already tried to reset router...

Ok, we are talking about an ethernet 10/100 PCI card right?

By normal cables you mean Cat5e patch cable I hope, there is a difference between patch and crossover cables that is not visibly noticable but it makes a big difference because they are wired differently.....some routers can't handle the crossover cable (crossover cables cost less money than the patch cables)....

What brand of router do you have and model #?
What brand of ethernet card do you have?

Also, What version of Internet explorer are you running and what other systems do you have connected to the router? If any are XP you need to run the XP utility on the 98 to get it to work....

Also, a big thing, do you have a firewall installed on your computer????? If so you need to configure it to allow access to the IP address that the router is using......

Those were just a bunch of thoughts, there are many possibilities to why it won't work.....

you need to verify if the cables are crossover or patch cables, you will get the lights flashing if it's the wrong cable, but no connection......here is a link to compare to the ends of your cables.... http://www.aptcommunications.com/ncode.htm

scroll down and look at the first set of pictures......notice the small picture of the plug in the center pointing out pin 1....now compare both ends of the same cable....if both ends look like T-568A then you have patch cables, if one end looks like T-568A and the other T-568B then you have crossover cables and need to get the regular patch cables.....

I know of a couple of sites to get those really cheep if that is the case....(like 20% of the regular cost at the store)....

basicly the easiest way to check them is to pull the "boot" back off the end, it should slide down the cable depending on if it's molded or just a boot..... (if you read on you'll find that only 4 of the 8 wires are used, to bad they don't use all 8, it would be so much faster...:D)

Ok, the lights just came on with an idea from something I've heard before.....I've heard that people have had problems with the Linksys routers because they sometimes won't configure properly...

How long have you had your router??? If it's new, pack it back up and take it back and go to bestbuy.com and get a D-Link DI-604 (only 19.99 after rebates)....best router I've ever installed and personally used, it's autosensing, all you need to do is plug it in.....I've used this specific router with windows 98 and it works great.....

Have had the router for about 9 months. My computer can connect, hubby's cannot.

well, if the cables are the right ones try going into internet options and delete all connections....and under lan settings make sure there are no check marks.....you DO NOT want to click on setup under connections.....
now go into network connections in the control panel, make sure you have "Internet Connection sharing" enabled and also while in there make sure you don't have an IP address manually listed.....You should also have Client for Microsoft Networks installed too (check to make sure that there isn't an ip address listed for this one either).....and if there is anything else or these aren't listed let me know what they are....I would give you more specific directions, but I don't have a windows 98 system here (I only have windows 3.1/95/2000/xp systems here, but I do remember doing this before....) If it still doesn't work let me know and I'll throw 98 onto an empty drive and I'll set it up on my network and we'll compare settings closer.....

I don't know man, usually caffiene enhances my computer-related abilities. ;) :D

Dos prompt gives a no ping detected. Or something similiar to this.

No ping detected? Hmmm. Would it be possible to get the exact message that appears when you type ipconfig? The numbers it spits out are somewhat important.
