  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

With all due respect for Pope John Paul II, we all know he' s going to be with the Lord soon ( well deservedly so). Do you think God will give us such a devoted, Spirit-filled leader of our church as this man has been? I would appreciate your thoughts.

It is impossible to know what God has planned. Nobody expected Karol Wojtyla, a relatively unknown cardinal, would be elected Pope, and yet it happened. God works in mysterious ways, we must place our trust in him.

Cardianl Arinze is my preference. He is Nigerian who has had extensive experience with Muslims in Africa. I think this is an important issue that can not be over looked. He may be too conservative (is that possible?).

Interesting! Has there been a black Pope before?

According to this book, Arinze has no Papal ambitions...but of course, its not up to him, but God!

There has been an African Pope in the Early Church. But I am not sure if he was actually black. Being from Northern Africa, I doubt if he was black as we understand it today.

I like him already, check this out...

http://www.cathnews.com/news/212/125.php

Cardinal Francis Arinze, the new prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, has said that if priests make their own changes in the ritual, "there were will as many kinds of Masses are there are priests".

I found this...

...he would be "the first African in 1,500 years to sit on the throne of St Peter". Three Africans have already occupied the office, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia: Victor (around AD 183-203), Mechiades or Militiades (possibly AD 311-314), and Gelasius (AD 492-496).

JPII was another who had no ambitions of being Pope. In my opinion we NEED another "too conservative" pope. There is also Father Christoph S. (I forget his last name) from Austria. He pretty much put together the Catechism. He would also make a great pope.

No, that would not be possible. :) I agree on Cardianl Arinze.
NDIrish,

Here is one of my favorite quote by His Eminence Cardinal Arinze on liturgical abuse.

The truth is that genuine inculturation has nothing to do with the product of the over-fertile imagination of an enthusiastic priest who concocts something on Saturday night and inflicts it on the innocent Sunday morning congregation now being used as a guinea pig.

This quote can be found in his keynote address last summer to celebrate the 40 year anniversery of Sacrosanctum Concilium.

Wow Met, that's a GREAT quote! I especially like his use of the word "inflicts". This man really gets it...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he gets the nod from the Holy Spirit.
