  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

We seem to get some good turnouts for the challenges, and I think the stewards are a bit too busy to manage us, so maybe we should manage ourselves. What say we have another monthly challenge, starting after Labour Day? You can think of it as your first school assignment :)

Let me throw out a few ideas and see what you think.

We could follow Southern Cross and do an assignment-based challenge. For example, we could try some more technical work on metering, or lighting. Or for a bit extra work, we could try some basic compositional topics such as texture, rule of thirds, repetition, lines, etc. This would give new photographers a chance to learn a new principle, experiment on their own, and see what others come up with.

We could open it up and do a subject-based challenge, where we pick a word, idea, or phrase and everyone does their best to shoot something which fits that subject.

We could do a concept-based challenge, where we pick an idea and try to shoot it. This may be tricky, as the colours, shapes, and elements may need to be chosen carefully. But the results can be a treat to see... if they turn out.

Or we could make the photo open but place restrictions on how the image was taken. For example, "3x4", where you go to a favorite place and then walk 3-units, turn and walk 4-units (feet, blocks, kilometres, etc.) and take the best picture you can from that spot. Or "noon" where the photo has to be taken at high-noon (normally a *terrible* time to take photos because of the harsh light). This is a bit more challenging.

I'm thinking that we should start simple and do an assignmet or subject challenge. Feedback?

I'm a big believer that Photoshop is a valuable tool for any photographer, so for my challenges all forms of digital manipulation are permitted. (Apologies in advance to the purists :p) The only requirement is that the photo is shot during the month of the challenge.

I'll make the final decision and post the challenge after Labour Day.

If we have new photographers (always like to), then why don't we do an assignment-based challenge? I'll try to write something up about the use and types of repetition in a photograph, and then we can all go out and try to take some samples. If Deamiter and Southern Cross are willing, they can chip in with some of their own thoughts and help answer questions, and then at the end of the contest, we'll open the floor to general voting.

If contestants wish, I'd also like the celebrity judges to offer some detailed comments on each photo - what was done well, what could be improved, etc. (Purely on an opt-in basis, you have to ask for feedback.) That way, we can all learn.

Deamiter may be able to pony up with some blessings, but I think most of this is just to have fun and learn a bit.

How does that sound?
