• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Does anyone else get crazy spikes from the news? I am afraid to turn on my TV any longer. Also, there are certain TV shows and movies that I've learned are triggers. I avoid them like the plague. Is that a normal thing? I'm just curious. I get frustrated because I can't do certain things with my friends like get together to watch TV shows or go to the movies. I've even had to drop out of certain book clubs...

I guess it's really not so bad. I just wanted to know if anyone else has learned what their triggers are and how to avoid them.

hey seems to me like satan is messin up ur life and cutting you freedom short, check out the post on the main topic page about the Kingdom of God. We repeat and hear all the time that when Jesus sets us free we are free indeed, but how many of us live it? Put on the full armor of God starting with the belt of truth. What is the truth? The Word is the truth therefore we must know it to put it on. If Jesus says you are free (there are conditions to that, because He says that if you continue in His word we are His disciples, and you will know the Truth and the Truth will make you free) then that is the truth. We must hold fast to that and put it on everyday, no intrusive thoughts, away with those in Jesus name, we must put on the Truth everyday!

It's time for some exposure/response therapy. Has a doctor told you how to do that? You really need to see one, because you can't avoid triggers forever, unfortunately. This is really affecting your life. Please get some help.

Seajoy,
It is something that we've discussed. But I don't know if I'm ready. To be honest, I'm kind of not thinking that it is not so bad for me to avoid scary violent movies and books. The only problem is that I can't watch the news...I'm in communications...I HAVE to watch the news...

It's affecting your life....it's time. God will see you through. Our same Lord saw me through my therapy....and it works!

God bless you!

I have the exact same problem. Certain topics in the TV or media are total triggers. I've tried exposure therapy, and its helped some (I tend to be the most informed around on the topics in question) but I still get real nervous for a while when I see them on TV.

I'm with you there on the news. Sometimes I wonder who are these people that can sit there with straight face telling the news and change from sad face to happy face when changing from subject to subject? The T.V. shows are getting worse too. And why do they show advertisements for awful graphic shows during pleasant programs?

Ummm, yeah...I was wondering about that just the other day. I just don't want to see a preview of a horror movie while I'm watching Friends reruns. Some of these ads for movies and crime shows are scary enough to almost make me cry - whether OCD is involved or not!

AND How many more crime shows could there possibly be. There are three Law and Orders, and three CSIs among others. it's getting ridiculous.

"Why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die? At least they could be decent enough to put just a tear in their eyes." -Jack Johnson

I have struggled with ocd most of my life. I am currently on a couple meds, and doing my best to attack my own demons through therapy. I do not have a cure, but can empathize with anxieties related to television and the news, as I've had them myself.

I think the news as is right now would make any reasonable person insane. It is not an accurate slice of the world. So often it focuses on the bad stuff. And though all the bodies just seem to pile up. There often seems to be little regard that the people in the news are human beings just like anyone else.

And the maddening thing about it is you really can't do anything. Even if you wanted to solve all the problems of the world, you can't. It truly is impossible. You can only do your part. And there will never be an end of bad stuff for them to throw up on the screen. The more I watch the news the more miserable I feel. And many television shows the include lots of violence, horrible crimes, terrorists, meaningless sex, and so forth do the same to me. And it feels like a race to the bottom with the industry having to put more shocking content on the tv every year as we become increasingly desensitized.

You are not alone. And you are loved.
