  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, their attention span is so short right now...let's see...

blowing bubbles
going for a walk in the stroller
Baby Einstein videos worked good for me!

I would just get down on the floor with Andie & show her different toys, rattles, etc...
maybe do baby massage?

How do you know he's getting fussy from boredom? He may be tired or OVER stimulated. I found out that it didn't take much with my daughter to have "too much" at that age, and the fussiness stopped when I put her down for more naps. Could that be it? It's just much more likely for babies to be overstimulated by things that seem like no big deal to us.

I read that if you do something simple like stick out your tongue a baby will copy you. So with my cousin Madison when she was five weeks old, I stuck out my tongue slowly 4 or 5 times and she followed me. I was 15 so it was the coolest thing it the world, we kept it up for a good 10 minutes, then she fell asleep.

It could be boredum. My son got fussy if not much was going on during the day sometimes.

If I were you, I would go to the store and buy a Fisher Price linkadoo hangey thing that hangs over baby's head. At first you dont get much of a reaction, just stares, but someday he will be old enough to bat at it and then hes reached a milestone. And I thought that toy was great because you can change the toys that hangs over baby's head and it collapses really small for travelling to someone's house. I can give you a picture if you need it.

ALSO, it gets tiring, but try holding him and walking around the room and talking to him about different items you are looking at. Or go on a stroller ride......... but he may fall asleep. Just in general though, a little fussing is normal, try to relax. As far as day times go, this is the easy time. You lay baby on blanket and he doesn't run off and break the VCR. He is still there when you turn around. Hehe. :sorry:

Make sure you are giving him tummy time too during his "play time." It helps him get stronger with those muscles and its a new perspective on the room.

I'd stay away from videos at this stage (though Baby Einstein is excellent). A newborn simply does not have that degree of focus yet to be that far from the TV and "get" a lot out of it.

Go with some music from CD, etc, if you cannot be right there...I recomment Mozart. If you have time to sit with your little one, read to him.

Do little baby exercises with him...put his legs up and down, while smiling and tlking to him.

Good luck...they are a joy at that age!

Lilly loves lights...out of all the things we bought her...a simple night light that hooks to the crib...no movement or anything..she can stare at it forever...she also likes the lamp in our living room...I did buy her one of those activity gym things like mentioned above where stuff hangs from it...I get it out put her under it on a pillow and move things on it and talk to her..she just lays there and stares and swings her arms and moves her legs...I do agree with above you can over stimulate them...a great book to get for great ideas for newborns and up...is what to expect the first year..it has some great ideas in there and tells you what all he will be able to do at different stages...its awesome to sit and watch those little eyes take it everything...makes you wonder whats going on in that little head of theirs.

I used to sing a song about 'mommy kissed your nose(or other body part)'
I think to the tune of that farmer takes a wife song. with 'hey there cutie pie' instead of 'heigh ho a dairy oh' (no idea how that is spelled really)

When I had DD, DS would find her body parts, toes, fingers etc. for her, she thought he was the greatest toy in the world.

dunno if there is a direct connection, but both could recognize body parts early.

Hanging toys are cool, if you only have the one kid you can makeshift with some boomerings strung accross where they are laying, woith toys hanging down.

Tummy time on mom or dads tummy is fun, and can be used to excersise if you feel like it :).

... you might want to encourage tummy time. Even for a few minutes. The baby I know who hated tummy time only grew more opposed to it over the months and therefore never learned to crawl or creep or anything. Just sit there or lay on his back. It can really hold back a lot of milestones.... he is a year old now and is barely learning to creep now.

A newborn will stare at a mobile, slowly blinking different colored lights, zig zag patterns and other simple patterns, bright colors (as long as its not a 50 box of crayola variety) and definitely, faces. Big, smiley faces. All of this stuff can be found in any "Right Start" or store that sells infant supplies. Or you can get out the butcher paper and markers or crayons and make it yourself! Tape it up above baby's head and let him preoccupy himself. No, I'm not a mommy, but I'm a nanny and I read allllll the books.....and try out this stuff for myself:) Enjoy your sweet baby; I sure am looking forward to my turn in a year or so!

I'm having the same problem, mine's 6 weeks and BORED! I does like the sling, but he just sleeps, I'm not sure if it helps the bordom problem. My step dad bought him one of those musical aquarium crib things and he LOVES it. He cries when it stops and I have to go push the button again. I hadn't thought about baby einstein yet, good suggestion! Ten minutes of that and he'll be wore out!

Our baby is eleven months old (Today) and we sing to her. Always a gospel hymm or a baby song. She loves the teapot song. Making faces and acting supid helps.

I always let her lay on my chest and let her hear my heartbeat. She seems to love it! I hope this helps. Congrats on your bundle!

It seems as though my master plan has potential...

Now, if only I could get a larger audience to participate, I'll be able to try and take over the world while everyone is busy trying to bite their elbows...
