Robert Alter has been translating the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament for the past decade or so. His next volume has just recently been released: Ancient Israel. It's a translation of the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings). I ordered mine and eagerly await its delivery. There is also a limited-time bargain-price sale going on with his last release The Wisdom Books (Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes).
I've been using his translations of Torah and Psalms and am constantly amazed and astounded not only by the quality of the translations, but the literary quality of his works. Robert Alter is not only a professional literary critic, but a scholar of Hebrew. And he combines them both to great effect in his translations. His goal is to make a translation whose literary art surpasses that of the King James. And I think he's done it. And yet he achieves high literary art in his translations without adopting outdated King James-isms.
Check out his translations. You'll never read the Old Testament the same again. (I was not paid or encouraged to make these recommendations)
