For some reason, I always feel the need to issue this caveat: I don't believe there is anything wrong with secular music.

1)From what source do you find your music(either kind, secular or Christian)? A better way to ask might be, what triggers you to go looking for a certain artist? I'm not interested in where you obtain it (Kazaa, Target, etc.), but where/how do you hear stuff that you've never heard before?

2) Do you actively look for Christian music and if you don't, why not?

Please be as specific as possible in your answers and don't turn this into a debate about the merits or evils of either type of music. We have other threads for that.

I heard a bunch that my brother has (he's an avid listener). I also used to look for reviews from christian sites, amazon.com, allmusic.com, and whatever else was available. ummm...Suggestiong from CF.

Nothing is WRONG with them. They just doesn't appeal to ME.

I like lyrics that are deep. Ones that I can relate too. Ones that I have a....connection to.
Again, I'm very picky when it comes to music. But that's not to say that christian music is for people who don't think about the quality of the music.
I mean...it's all on personal preference. Personal background. The way I think.
The music that thinks the same way as me....that's what i listen to.

Everyone will find different music to be deep and challenging. Not everyone will find the same CD as inspiring.

Honestly, there shouldn't even be a debate that starts, because music is not something that should be debated over. If someone likes something, why question it. If someone doesn't...who cares? But yeah...I'm sure no debate should start. Hopefully. :)

I have a list of bands/artists that I know I like and will purchase albums of without listening to reviews or demos. The list is pretty short and since it consists mainly of classic rock & old Christian rock stuff, I don't really buy many CD's anymore since my collection of old stuff is fairly well-rounded.

I will check out new artists from time to time, usually on the recommendation of others. If a friend with similar tastes recommends a particular band, I may listen to some demos or try to dig up mp3's (which is difficult with some Christian artists).

Not really. Christian music trends usually follow secular music trends by a year or two, and I just don't enjoy any of the musical styles that have appeared over the last decade or so. I'll buy stuff by the artists on my "list of artists from whom I'll buy anything they make" list. I do like bargain bins in Christian bookstores though- I don't mind taking risks on a $2 CD. :) Even at very cheap prices I'll only buy stuff I've heard about in reference to other music I like (i.e. "Fans of Suchandsuch will enjoy music by Soandso").

Answer to question 1: All kinds of places. Like another has said, I have some bands that I really love and will buy cd's of without looking at reviews at all; Radiohead's a good example of this (BTW, you listen to that Radiohead song I sent you Brett?). I also have a couple of sites on the net that usually have similar tastes to mine, so if they recommend something then I usually check it out. I might also buy music b/c I have heard it compared to other bands I like. I also have a friend who is similarly obsessed with music who is recommending stuff to me all the time (woulda never found Interpol w/o him--they rock) and I usually return the favor as well.

Answer to question 2: No. Why not? Mostly because I am lazy. I have heard enough about Christian music as unoriginal that I haven't explored much further. The general consensus I've seen on these forums is that Christian music is fitting Christian lyrics to secular music styles. While lyrics are important, they certainly don't have to be the most important thing, and I really would like to have stimulating music with lyrics I don't really relate with than boring music with interesting lyrics. So, I have (probably too hastily) drawn the conclusion that Christian music will not be that interesting to me.

Mainly under influence of my family. The stuff I was raised on (mostly classic country) I've just always listened too. My classic rock triggers are, first hand, my uncles who I spent a lot of time with when I was younger. They listened to it, so I listened to it. It just stuck with me, and now I hate all new music. :D

No. Because I haven't liked anything so far, and anything new that's going to come out I can guarentee I won't care for.

If I like a band, I'll usually buy/download their stuff. To find out about bands I've never heard of, I resort to forums/friends.

2) Do you actively look for Christian music and if you don't, why not?

Nope. The majority of music I listen to is Japanese Rock, and some American Rock. I prefer music that varies, and even though Christian music can be a varied genre at times, I've just never been interested, seeing as I like deeper lyrics. (even though some Christian bands have deep lyrics) I guess I'm lazy, too. XD

While I wish more people (Christians, in particular) would give Christian music more of a chance, I think that it is beyond AWESOME that a 14 year old AND a female even knows who Fleetwood Mac is, let alone likes them (Rumours is one of the best albums of all-time).

Then at the same time, you dig classic country. Who - BTW? Merle, Waylon & Willie are my favorites, who else?

You are truly a unique girl. :clap:

Before I was sixteen, I basically got my music from anywhere. I listened heavily to the radio and music video shows, one of my friends always played Christian music at his house so I heard a LOT there (before I was a Newsboys hater, I was a Newsboys fan thanks to him), and another one of my friends downloaded heaps of songs and had a massive playlist always on when I was at his house, and he would play just about anything so I heard a massive variety there. However, I slowly became disillusioned with both what I hear on the radio and Christian music, and I began to stop listening to it as regularly. A short while later, my U2 fanaticism really took hold, and I basically stopped listening to anything I wasn't familiar with already. When some people pointed out I was listening to way too much U2, I took recommendations from other people and rebroadened what I listen to again.

Now? Well, I still mainly listen to U2, because most other stuff I hear I PERSONALLY feel is inferior. I listen to a lot of what my fellow U2 fans recommend - that's how I got onto Coldplay and Five Iron Frenzy - and I look into whatever my friends happen to be listening to. I avoid pop and rap with the passion of ten thousand suns.

2) Do you actively look for Christian music and if you don't, why not?
Yes and no. I do not look for Christian music in the sense of looking for CCM. I find that stuff asinine, unfulfilling, and uncreative. However, I do look for stuff like U2 - Christian secular with deeper themes. My friends know to tell me whenever they find a band with really good, thoughtful Christian songs.

1) Basically... I hear one song from the radio... (X-FM) and I'll buy the album - It's what I done for Lost Prophets, Snow Patrol, Incubus and such. Sometimes I borrow CDs from friends and decide whether I like the myself and sometimes I use websites that give similar band names.

2) My dad is the manager of our good ol' local Wesley Owen... So he brings home Christian titles for me to listen to and decide on :p

I go to a lot of shows, and I have some friends that are REALLY into music, and have friends who are in bands or whatever, so I usually hear a lot of new stuff on a regular basis. I dont really like Christian music, of course I dont have anything against it, its just preference. Its funny, I guess people assume you HAVE to praise God with Christian music, and if it isnt Christian music, then it cant be praising God. Personally, I'll listen to some songs that really remind me of God, whether or not they are intended to be about God is irrelevant, its what the song means to me and God knows this. Im such a dork, i'll hear a song that reminds me of Him and I'll let Him know, "This ones for you big guy." Haha.

1) Lots of sources. Usually I find new music via friends, radio, indie internet sites, magazines, and message boards of artists that I already like.

2) Yeah, I check out new Christian music to see if I like any of it. Usually, however, I find that it's either the same bland stuff I've listened to before or an untalented rip-off of some secular band (and the secular band I usually don't like to begin with).

I am a Christian and listen to both secular and CCM. But I must confess that I don't really like todays music, and am not overly fussed on CCM either. Rather, I like music with excellent electric guitarists and drummers, long guitar solos, drum solos, bands with a selection of short and long songs,(8 min. plus ), a great deal of variety and innovation, such as instrumentals and ballads to blues and rock and heavy metal. For me, the only such bands are Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Uriah Heep, Creedence Clearwater Revival etc.

That's pretty basic. I hear from friends, on the radio, internet radio is where I pick up a lot of underground stuff. TV, movie soundtracks, word of mouth, all that stuff.

It depends if I hear something I like. Xian music is unorigional and boring for the most part with only a few exceptions who have stepped away from doing "what everyone likes in the secular community" and have done their own thing. All they have done is make "safe versions" of music for people to listen to and I find that utterly rediculas.

"Almost persuaded" now to believe;
"Almost persuaded" Christ to receive;
Seems now some soul to say,
"Go, Spirit, go Thy way,
Some more convenient day
On thee I'll call."

"Almost persuaded," come, come today,
"Almost persuaded," turn not away;
Jesus invites you here,
Angels are lingering near
Pray'rs rise from hearts so dear;
O wand'rer, come! "Almost persuaded," harvest is past!
"Almost persuaded," doom comes at last!
"Almost" cannot avail;
"Almost" is but to fail!
Sad, sad, that bitter wail-
"Almost," but lost!

Um alright.....

I usually get my music from people I know. They usually really tell if they like something, and then I'll check it out. Then I usually go and look at Amazon "people that bought this cd also got" sections.

I don't go looking for Christian music, it tends to find me and I do not like most of it. I used to be very conservative and only listened to Christian music, now my taste have switched to Rock, and most Christian rock is not very good.

I always have my ear out. Music is my hobby. When I have a good week at work I buy 3 or 4 cds a week. My max is 20 and my min is one. So, I need to keep an ear out for music I don't have.

If I hear anyone say X band is good and I see the CD on sale I have a listen. If I like it and it's within my price range I buy it. Mainly my info comes from other people, but also from radio.

I also keep my eye out for CDs by older bands that all the oldies rave about. The CD's tend to be a lot cheaper (which is how I can afford to buy so many.) and the music is just as good.

2) Do you actively look for Christian music and if you don't, why not?

No. Most Christian radios play CCM. I dislike CCM. I find it very rarely gets to the soul of the issue. It tends to be quite bland. CCM doesn't move me to praise God or get into his word as some find it does for them.

Now, praise and worship I keep a little eye out for. In that I occasionally go to a christian store solely to buy a praise and worship CD. I adore some praise and worship CD's, but I won't just listen to them in the background. If I have it on I like to have half my mind on it and actually sing along. Otherwise I'll start to see it as just entertainment for me, and I get too much value out of not treating it like that.
