• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It's been quite a while since we had a photography challenge, mostly because my life has been rather crazy with all sorts of other commitments.

Is anybody interested in designing a challenge? I could certainly provide 17,000 blessings as prizes (10,000; 5,000 and 2,000) but we'd need a subject with rules and enough interest (i.e. submissions) to make it work.

I'll run everything from this end -- all you'd need to do is design the challenge, and PM me as needed to make sure I don't forget about the whole thing. I really do love getting PMs from members -- even with serious issues. It's a WHOLE lot more rewarding to help a member than to deal with an impersonal report!

But that's besides the point. Any takers? I certainly wouldn't mind if multiple members worked together on this.

I am fairly new here and just discovered this forum...I am very much into photography, but my lens is broke at the moment so this might be a way I could participate.

I would be interested in helping out...but I don't know how much I am able to commit to right now...my plate is kind of full...where do I find the submissions thing you said to read.

Deamiter, you know my track record on these things. I can just up and disappear for a few months when my studio gets to be too busy. That's what happened with my last photo challenge that I initiated.

If you want some ideas...

1. Macro Shots - focus on the miniature world
2. Black & white landscapes
3. Self Portraits (this one could be fun)
4. Your best vacation shot of all time (no nudity, please :))
5. Art shot - set up an artistic presentation. Could be a bowl of fruitand a pottery pitcher on a table, or a single flower against a black background, etc. Somthing that could be considered "art", and you are learning from it.
6. Pick a material that everyone has access to (i.e., one or two sheets of 8.5X11 paper) and make your best image using creative lighting and creative positioning of the material. Everyone is required to use the same material.
7. Create a comical ad using one of your photos.
8. A shot that best represents where you live and the neighborhood you live in.

Those are just a few creative thoughts that came to mind.

Uniquetadpole: nothing to read (I edited the post to be more clear). I just meant we'd need submissions!

No takers yet eh? I'm mostly looking for somebody to run it, since I'm VERY prone to forgetting (as is Southern Cross :p )

If nobody steps up, I'll see what I can do to get another one running on my own. I really WOULD like to start another, but I've got MUCH too much on my plate right now to be able to follow through consistantly. That's what I get for trying to do grad school I imagine!

I'd say just post the challenge with detailed rules and a time limit. Maybe something like:

1. 30 days to post your best two images that fall under the chosen subject matter.
2. Limit comments to constructive critique and encouraging words
3. Close the thread after 30 days
4. Either choose a panel of moderators to pick a winner, or create a "vote now" thread with each image listed to allow Christan Forums to vote on the best image (absolutely no trolling allowed - you can't ask your friends to visit and vote only for you)
5. As of a particular target date, close the voting thread and tally the votes. Very straight forward.

There are a few CF members who are very much into fine art and they can be tapped as judges if needed. They have a critical eye, formal education, and art is their profession. So that's another option as well to keep things unbiased if you want to be really serious about this. I don't think we need to get that serious, because so many of us on this forum are amateurs. Very few professional photographers visit.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Deamiter asked for someone to run it and I volunteered. I have a few ideas and have taken some from posts here and in other challenges. I have a couple questions, before starting it.

Do y'all prefer to have a few really big challenges through the year (with a month or more for shooting/posting) or a number of smaller challenges with shorter time limits?

Do y'all prefer a challenge that is specific in nature (lots of direction given as to subject) or more general?

Do y'all want to vote on each other and let the whole forum select 'winners' or would you rather there be a panel who aren't taking part in the challenge vote on winners?

A think a mixture of these would be good - sorry if that sounds indecisive!

Personally, I'd prefer if the challenges where quite specific.

I think a panel would work better. :)

I hope I'm not too late, I see there's action in the photography forum... I think that challenges that are maybe 1-2 months in length would be best. Unfortunately its so gray here and dull, its hard to even get good indoor pictures because the lighting is so blah and I don't have any fancy equipment... so keep in mind that those of us in cold climates will have to work with limitations of that sort. We've only gotten snow here once in November, its dark and dull and thats it.

I like a subject like "lights" or "black and white texture" or "self portrait".... I guess those are more general? I guess if they're too specific I may not have enough time to do them since I am a student and a wife/mother. ;)

I think that after the entries come in, maybe we could let the "whole forum" vote.... it would be nice, actually, if we could get some votes from the rest of the forum who never peeks in the photography forum, any ideas about how we could do that?

All in all, I know there are more photography-interested people who don't always come over here (such as myself) becaues there isn't always a lot going on. :)

emergentpdx,
I would be happy to help you run it...PM me if you would like me to help out...I have a few ideas:

I think maybe a larger themed contest on a monthly basis...possibly with blessings as awards maybe...I dunno how this works ...and maybe weekly or biweekly creative challenges just for fun. And maybe some holiday challenges too.
