Hi there my Calvinist cohorts-

I have a few new papers over on ntrmin.org-

1. Jonathan Edwards view of Mary: Imagine, Jonathan Edwards writing about the virgin Mary, how outrageous-

http://www.ntrmin.org/Edwards%20view%20of%20Mary.htm

Comments or criticsm?

Blessings,
James Swan

Thanks for the article about Jonathan Edwards on Mary. The Reformers too had a high and yet biblical view of Mary. Too often today Protestants are afraid to talk about her. They have again over reated to Roman Catholic error on the subject.

In Christ,
Kenith

Hi Bulldog,

Thanks for link. I went over there a checked out the thread. About 98% of it didn't even address Luther and his attitudes toward the Jews! Anyway, I linked my paper- I find that if I can get one or two extremely hostile critics of any of my research, it helps me understand if i've hit or missed the mark.

Thanks Again,
James Swan

Hi Kennith,

I know what you mean....somewhere in my library I have audio set from Sproul in which he did a 5 or 6 part series on Mary. He raises the same points you do. I think it's needed to combat Roman Catholic error on Mary, but it's also needed to present a positive Biblical Mary as well.

The paper on Edwards and Mary was fun to do. I did Luther's Mariology a few years ago . At some point i'd like to do Calvin as well.

Blessings,
James Swan

I undestand Calvin believed Mary continued and virgin. And defended that point. I don't know. I do know he had no problem with the phrase theotokos.

I think the Catholics have gone into the ditch about Mary, and Most Protestants seem to think that the proper response is to drive into the opposite ditch.

That always amazes me.

Kenith
Ps. How about a link to the Luther Mariology article?

There are at least two key texts Roman Catholics utilize to say Calvin believed Mary was a perpetual virgin. When one goes back and reads the quotes in context, Calvin is really saying not to speculate on the matter, one way or the other. I can pull up my research on this if you're interested. (edited to add: this old discussion from the CARM boards has stuff on Calvin's Mariology:

Sure thing. Dr. Eric Svendsen over at NTRmin.org has graciously allowed me to put some papers on his site. He is simply an awesome guy, and everyone should really have a close look at his books as well as his material on ntrmin.org. Jason Engwer, who's material is also on NTRmin.org has some of the best material available on Roman Catholicism. Both these guys produce excellent material in dealing with the spurious arguments put forth by Roman Catholic apologetics.

Anyway, the general link to my stuff is:

http://www.ntrmin.org/rccorner-reformation.htm

Luther's Theology of Mary is available here:

I use the material on Webster's website frequently. I also have the 3 volume set he co-authored with David King: Holy Scripture: The Ground and Pillar of Our Faith. Those 3 volumes never leave my desk. I use them often.

Bill's works are excellent stuff. I have Holy Scriptures Vol 2 and the Matthew 16 Controversy. Haven't finished either one, but both have been really good. Bill is a wonderful man of God and a great preacher. He is concerned for the truth and having the truth move us closer to a love relationship with Christ.

What books did you order?

I've read a good bit of his stuff on line and I am excited about getting his books.

Thanks for the articles, James. I enjoyed both of them and thought they were insightful.

Have you ever been published?

Thanks for the kind words...

I had an article published in a journal, but the name of that journal escapes me at the moment.

James Swan
