No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. Im a Christian (protestant, could say methodist, but Im still not sure).

Anyways I was reading through Psalms and Proverbs, i was wondering if what the teachings in psalms and proverbs hold still? As in, like i hear people saying the 10 commandments in the old testament are repeated all but 1 in the new testament and just follow according to the New Testament.

I mean, we believe in the old and new testament, but do we follow the teachings/commands of the old testament? Or just following the teachings/commands of the new testament?

Like proverbs 3:1-2

My child,[a] never forget the things I have taught you.
Store my commands in your heart.
2 If you do this, you will live many years,
and your life will be satisfying.

Does this still "hold"? Like are we supposed to bear in mind the teachings of proverbs also? Or just follow the new testament?

In general, the Old Testament holds true, but not specifically. In short, what I mean is that the Old Testament is meant to show us that living a godly life will bring blessing and 'likely' a longer life...it's healthier and saner than the alternative. Although the Old Testament does not offer a guarantee to us as Christians, it does incorporate the idea that God's Providence and Judgment play a primary part in the mix of our lives as we live before Him.

But specifically, the Old Testament does not hold true in the sense that in this time of the New Covenant of Christ, we are saved by placing faith in Christ and not by attempting to follow the specifics of the Old Law. We as Christians may be subject to persecution, abuse and/or early death at the hands of the world because of our testimony of Christ as Savior. In this age, God subjects us to vulnerability so that we may share in the Glory and Suffering of Jesus.

This is a brief explanation, perhaps too brief, but I hope it clarifies the basic idea for you.

The purpose of "The Law" was to show us what was wrong in our lives and what our sins were. A sin is essentially any decision we make that is outside the perfect will of God. Many, if not all, of those laws were put in place to facilitate our procreation, to prevent quarrels, to avoid offending others, to maintain health and cleanliness, to provide for quality nourishment of food, to prevent disearse, to avoid idol worshiop, to offer acceptable sacrifices and maintain a social order. But the results of all those laws can be summed up in the two primary commandments...

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these. (Mar 12:30)

Dear Brian90. In Matthew, chapter 22, verses 35-40, Jesus tells a Lawyer: " The first and great Commandment is: love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like unto it: love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." That goes for the Old and New Testament. Love is what God wants from us, love freely given and no conditions asked. Jesus also told us: If you love me, you will follow my Commandments. Love for God with all our beings, and love for each other as we love ourselves. If we show our love in all we do, or say, God will notice and approve, and give us His Blessings. Jesus also told us to Repent, to exchange our selfish and unloving character for loving God and each other. Jesus will give us His Love and Joy to share, and the Holy Spirit will empower us with love all around. " Ask and ye will receive" is what Jesus promised us. I say this with love, Brian. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ. P.S. We might often stumble, but God promised to forgive us, as we forgive those who sin against us.

In the Old testament time, Jesus had not yet died, therefore there were allot of symbols or shadows of what the coming Messiah would do in regards to our sins. In the Old testament they had to offer animal sacrifices for their sins, whereas Jesus is our ultimate sacrifice as we see in the new testament. Then now you need to see where certain laws come in. Because they had to offer sacrifices there were laws which gave direction as to how, when and what should be offered. With the removal of these sacrifices and ordinances by Jesus also came the removal of these laws.

Heb 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Heb 10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Many folks believe the Old Testament is the Old Covenant and then since the Old Covenant is no more, they believe the Old Testament does not speak to us anymore. However, the Old Covenant and the Old Testament is different just as the New Covenant and the New Testament is different. The New Covenant was instituted at the death of Jesus but the New Testament was compiled many years after Jesus died. Correctly understood a covenant is an agreement between two parties. God tells the people to do this, and if they do, he will do xyz. It is wrong thinking to believe that you can pick out from the Old Testament what you don't want to do.

God gave his law on stone, the people said they would do it along with many other laws and they did not. In the New Covenant as God told Jeremiah, he would put his laws not on tablets of stone but on fleshy tablets of the heart. Whatever in the Old Testament that does not apply to us, must be shown with logic and the bible.

Ok, the New Covenant is the Kingdom of GRACE.

Its all based on JESUS (not you, and not me) as we can't save ourselves.
(let alone anyone else).

When you see any command in scripture, (old or new) or law,
know that they were all fulfilled by JESUS!

They are not based on you trying to keep them, but by HIM already keeping them all.

Every world religion including christian religion, has its set of rules and requirements.

But not JESUS - HE is the way, HIS LOVE is fuel and your belief is the only requirement.

Note: Belief meaning Faith or simply 'trusting JESUS'.

Its all to your benefit because HE LOVES you so much.

Your part is real simple (and this is where we fail) all we have to do is
believe. And you know when you believe, you rest.
Because there is nothing left to do - everything is done.

Does this mean, we sleep in everyday of our lives, and do nothing?

No WAY!

Why?

HIS LOVE (which is HIMSELF) comes inside us (new birth) and HE LIVES
in us. HE is the motivator, (using LOVE) - that is the benchmark, this is how
we live. Moment by moment, spontaneous love.

LOVE is the fuel of FAITH.
LOVE is the benchmark of WISDOM.
LOVE is the key to JOY.
LOVE is the tonic of PEACE.

Brian,

It can seem a bit confusing at first concerning the Old and New Testaments. I hope I can explain it simply and clearly for you because it is something every Believer needs to know.

The Law in the Old Testament actually contains 600 commandments. The Ten Commandments were the first God gave us, and serve as a kind of compilation of all others - like the short version. Jesus gave the shortest version of all - which encompasses the whole Law, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself."

God's promises in the OT and the NT are without end for the Believer. His mercy and protection and love are for all his children from the first to the last.

The part we no longer need to worry about in the Old Testament is the fact that animal sacrifice had to be done in order to cover sin - not hold us guilty - and push it forward another year. Every year, sacrifices had to be done until God's Son - the perfect sacrifice died for us and resurrected. At that moment, animal sacrifice was obsolete. Every sin of every person for all time was not only covered, but paid for so that we do not have to pay for our sin. The curse of the Law of sin and death has no more power over a Believer, but a Believer should do his best to obey God's commandments.

I hope I wasn't too wordy.

Dear Brian90, I would encourage you to let the bible guide you for many would say allot of misleading things. For example, "The New Covenant is the Kingdom of Grace". This is no where in the bible. Why not let the bible tell us what the New Covenant is about.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
Heb 8:11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
Heb 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

Heb 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
Heb 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Understand from these verse that God puts his law on our hearts and it is not there for us to disregard. Statement such as "Every world religion including christian religion, has its set of rules and requirements. But not JESUS - HE is the way, HIS LOVE is fuel and your belief is the only requirement.", is misleading because Jesus expects us to live up to a standard and when we fall into sin, we have an advocate with Jesus who would justify us through our faith. When many say we just have to rest, Jesus says this:

Luk 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Christians are followers of Jesus. It means we also try to walk like he walked. If he lived a life of obedience we should as well. To say that because he kept the law, we shouldn't, is totally opposite to what a Christian should do. If he did it, so should we.

I think a good basis is the Gospels-Matthew Mark Luke and John, listening to them on mp3 is a great way to really get what Jesus says firmly in your head.

This is especially true for us who are adopted Gentiles in Christ -

Much of the Old Testament is reaffirmed in The New, and therefore is still applicable.

Some of The Old Testament is revised in The New, and therein, The New takes precedence.

And other parts of The Old are neither reaffirmed nor revised in The New, and these can generally be considered optional, especially for Gentiles, who are grafted into God's family via Christ.

1. Example of the reaffirmed -

Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. <-----> Leviticus 19:18

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: <-----> James 2:8

2. Example of the revised -

And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. <-----> Deuteronomy 19:21

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
<-----> Matthew 5:38+39 ( Words of Jesus )

3. Example of neither reaffirmed nor revised -

...In the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath. <-----> Leviticus 23:39

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
<-----> Romans 14:5+6

That's what has been shown this seeker of truth.
