  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There's a new peer-reviewed journal just released through SpringerLink, entitled "Evolution: Education and Outreach". The first issue is available for free and can be found here:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/120878/

This will no doubt provide must-reading for those interested in the non-debate.

Thanks, Mallon

I read David Zeigler's article, The Question of Purpose. Although I agree with him on what TOE says and doesn't say, I found it a little disturbing how much the article was trying to denounce faith, or so it seemed to me.

Quote: Darwinian evolution by natural selection results in adaptations which increase the ability of the individuals to survive and reproduce successfully in their respective environments, or as biologists would say--adaptations increase the fitness of individuals. This is the only evolutionary goal or purpose for which science has found objective evidence.
In our science, there is no mention of, or mechanism for achieving, any long-term metaphysical or teological goals of form, complexity, or intelligence.

He made it seem like because evolution couldn't prove or disprove metaphysical goals they don't exist. Do that many people think TOE somehow provides a means to an end? I had always thought that TEs (who I'm assuming he's talking to) believed that evolution is a process sparked by God, but guided by the natural laws set in place by God, and it was that spark that is always under heavy debate.

I haven't read the article. But the quote "In our science, there is no mention of, or mechanism for achieving ..." suggests to me only that such is beyond science's ability to discover, therefore we don't posit it.

Again, without reading the article, I'd guess that he's taking a defensive stance.
