  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

A few observations that I am making sense of.

God was making a new covenant because they in the old covenant would not keep it. There came of necessity a new covenant. In the new covenant instead of writing the laws on paper, in the new covenant He would write in on their hearts.

The problem with the old covenant was it could make no one righteous, they broke it and then they came under condemnation. But with the writing of the law on your heart, then you would keep it by the Spirit instead of striving to fulfill the letter.

Paul says the righteousness of the law was revealed from faith to faith. Covenant to covenant. In the first, they saw it in perfection but were unable to accomplish their end. The new uses the same perfection, but now there is the ability to accomplish because the laws are on our hearts. They are our life and our joy. They are no longer greivious toward us. But we establish and fulfill the righteousness of the law in our lives by ceasing from sin and living unto God in a life of perfection, purity, righteousness, and holiness until the day we die.

Thank the Lord for giving us so great an ability based on the faith in His promises.

Hey IReckonSow,

Good question. For a few reasons, first and foremost because the writer of Hebrews quotes this passage from Jeremiah word for word, verse for verse saying that this is the better covenant which Jesus established.

Second, because I am witness that God now writes the laws on our hearts. He has told us to be holy as He is holy. Be perfect as He is perfect. Be pure as He is pure. Be righteous as He is righteous. Go and sin no more.

He had told us how this is accomplished in us. By the belief that Jesus is the Son of God. How would that accomplish it? Because Jesus said he who He set free is free indeed. We must doubt His word to say otherwise. He has told us that our old man is dead and now we are alive unto God. The new man, the partaker of the divine nature won't sin because he has the law of God written in His heart. Since the old man is dead, we then become a servant of God, a servant of righteousness free from sin.

The carnal mind is emnity toward God, because it is not subject to the law of God, neither can it be. It cannot please God. But we are not in the flesh and we pay no attention to the carnal. We mind the things of the Spirit. Therefore we are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in us.

Abraham was told by God he was the father of many nations. He didn't consult with his carnal experience and ask God but God I have no children. No rather He believed God. Not believed in, he believed.
God tells us we are dead. And in the same way as our forefather of faith believed Him about his seed, we believe Him about ourselves. Being then buried with Christ, we are also raised from the dead by the glory of the Father with Christ. By that operation of God we then walk in newness of life, never again for the rest of our lifes to walk according to the lusts of the flesh.

Thank God for going before us to claim the victory over every temptation, trial, and tribulation. Since He is God, mighty and strong, God mighty in battle, by our faith in Him we overcome the world. The Lord our fortress, our bulwark, our refuge, in Him will we trust with no confidence in our flesh. For this reason He is not ashamed to be called our God and has prepared a city for us.

Blessed be the name of the Lord. May His glorious works be known throughout the earth.

HEBREWS 8 [8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH: [9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. [10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: FOR ALL SHALL KNOW ME, FROM THE LEAST TO THE GREATEST. [12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. [13] In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now THAT WHICH DECAYETH AND WAXETH OLD IS READY TO VANISH away.

Everytime I bring up scripture proving that christians are to obey God and keep His commandments, I always hear the same argument. The “many” will say, that scripture is not for christians, its for the house of Israel (the 10 scattered tribes) and the house of Judah (the jews). But at some point in time during the discussion the “many” will bring up the above scripture, which clearly states its to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. I don’t see a gentile mentioned anywhere. But this scripture the “many” claim for the gentiles. So whats the story? That being said....

This covenant is not yet here. This was written after Christ had risen and this scripture says that when God does make this new covenant, everyone shall know the Lord. Does every man on this earth know the Lord from the least to the greatest? No. And if that aint enough, verse 13 says “Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away”. Again keep in mind that this was written after Christ had risen and the scripture clearly says that the old covenant is ready to vanish away. Not that it has.

JEREMIAH 31 [31] Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: [32] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: [33] But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I WILL PUT MY LAW IN THEIR INWARD PARTS, AND WRITE IT IN THEIR HEARTS; AND WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.

So at what point in time (according to scripture) does this covenant arrive?

JEREMIAH 32 [37] Behold, I WILL GATHER THEM OUT OF ALL COUNTRIES, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: [38] And THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE, AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD: [39] And I WILL GIVE THEM ONE HEART, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: [40] And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

Yeah. After the gathering to the 1000 yr period of rest(in the twinkling of an eye).

Then! Elijahsk,

EVERYONE WILL KNOW THE LORD

IReckonSow,

Very good points. And sorry for the length of time it has taken me to respond.

I would conceed that this verse in Jeremiah is talking about Isreal. It is obvious. But does that mean we are not walking in this covenant with God ourselves now? I think not.

Isreal was a shadow of good things to come for us. Now God has made us to walk in the covenant to provoke them to jealous. Then we become the shadow of them. Let me give a few other scriptures.

Psa 37:30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. 31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. Eze 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh: 20 That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 37:26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them forevermore. 27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 28 And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them forevermore. Hos 2:23 And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God. 2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Do you see the similitude of that covenant which he gave them and the one in which we are walking today?

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Now the covenant we surely do walk in is the same covenant he gave to Abraham. He gave Abraham the sign of that covenant which is circumcision. And Abraham is the father of us all. But we have the true circumcision. The one God asked of Isreal in Deut 10:16, 30:6; and Jer 4:4. The circumcision of the heart. Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Now we can either walk after the law of God written on our hearts, or not. If we don't we are blind and can not see afar off and have forgotten that we were purged from our old sins. But if we give diligence to making our calling and election sure we will never fail. God has made an everlasting covenant with us for good. That which He has promised He is also able to fulfil.
