I have heard many people over the years saying that there's a gap in the market for some good quality Christian entertainment other than music. And let's be honest you can pick one genre of Christian music and listen to it for the rest of your life without repeating a single track! BUT how many good Christians films, series or even sitcoms are there out there. Well, I work for Trans World Radio UK, a Christian radio station based in the UK, and I love comedy! I've been thinking for ages about what to do about this and it's now time for me to offer up my small effort to try and bring the message of Jesus to the world of the sitcom. It's just a radio sitcom so far and it's not too preachy but it does have good Christian principles at the foundations as well as some good wholesome humour which I hope people will enjoy.
I'm aware that a number of people will be turned off from the idea of Christianity and comedy appearing in the same sentence, some because it can be hard to conceive how they could possibly go together but others simply on principle - that principle being that the gospel is serious and should only be presented in ways incoming with this tone. I can see both perspectives (just as I can see how some people don't like peanut butter) but I hope that, if their preference allows, a good number of people will be blessed and refreshed by what I think is needed in some Christian circles - a good old breath of fresh air that provides a great alternative to some of the other things on TV and radio that aren't exactly uplifting or beneficial to a healthy way of thinking.
Well, after enquiring at various stations in the UK, it seems no-one has even tried a Christian sitcom before so I thought I'd have a go and see what could happen.
Grandpa Ted therefore is the UKs First Christian-Sitcom, which has just begun broadcasting on TWR-UK this week! I hope this radio sitcom will be one small step in changing our culture for the better by bringing good morals and principles to people around the UK (and further!) It may not be the best thing in the world but if it kick starts a move towards the production of other such series and it stops people attempting to justify their choice of entertainment through saying 'Well, I don't like what's on TV but there's nothing else to watch!', then I'll be very pleased indeed.
The first episode of 'Grandpa Ted' is now available around the world on the website of TWR-UK or via itunes - just search for Grandpa Ted. You can also join Grandpa-Ted on facebook or twitter by searching for GrandpaTed1. Listen throughout the UK via TWR's website or on sky digital channel 0138 or freesat channel 790. It's on for 13 weeks in total so why not sit back, relax and give it a try. Hopefully it'll be something you'll enjoy. And let me know what you think - especially those of you, who in previous posts, have asked whether there are any Christian sitcoms in existence. The answer of course is now 'yes'!
