  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1. God did not come about. God is, always was, and shall always be, for ever.

2. The word "serpent" is often translated "snake," but I have no reason to think it is true.

3. God caused the Bible to be written, by motivating carefully selected human beings to write it down.

I can help by telling you about how the bible came about. The bible is a compilation of 66 books by forty-some authors written over centuries of time. This is one of the things that separates Christianity from other world religions. The fact that there are 66 books written by many people, and they never contradict each other once. And that says a lot. I will give you a VERY brief overview of the bible.

Section 1. Books of Law. Also called the Torah, Mosaic law, Books of Moses...
These 5ive books tell about the creation of the world, the fall of man, Noah's ark, Abraham and his descendents. The entire bible is a book of one family extending down it's family tree until this family became an entire nation. There are genealogies after genealogies that seem to stretch on forever telling people's family history. And as extensive as these are, they never contradict each other. These books tell God's law. The Law exists for the sole purpose of showing that we have sinned against God and are therefore in need of a savior. Moses wrote them with the exception for the last part of Deuteronomy which was probably Joshua. It was common for books back then to be edited by a finalizer.

Section 2. Books of history
These books tell about how after the nation of Israel came out of slavery they conquered many nations and established themselves as God's chosen people. Some people think that it's sad that God shows favoritism, but it was all because God established a covenant with Abraham and his descendents. The books are (Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1Samuel, 2Samuel, 1Kings, 2Kings, 1Chronicles, 2Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther) The books of Chronicles are a repeat of Samuel and kings. They tell what happened in Israel until it got conquered by Babylon in about 5ive hundred some B.C. God warned them over and over again that if they didn't follow His commandments, Israel would be taken over. And it happened.

Section 3. Books of poetry
These tell all sorts of Godly knowledge and wisdom. Psalms is worship to God. There is even Love poetry. These were written by many authors as well.

Section 4. Major Prophets
God speaks through prophets. They tell what God wants for His people. These prophets are called major not by what they have done, but by the size of their books. They tell of time during and after the reign of Israel.

Section 5. Minor prophets.
Same as above, but these are short books. Some of them are just a couple pages long.

Part II. New Testament
Section 6. Gospels
After 400 years of silence, God finally speaks again. Between 6 and 4 B.C., Jesus is born in the little town of Bethlehem. All 4 gospels tell the same story by different authors and were written by the people that their titles are. (Matthew wrote Matthew etc.) These gospels tell us what Jesus taught and what He did during His time on earth. He predicted His murder 3 times in the text, along with many, many, other prophesies throughout the Gospel and all of them came true. Often times hundreds of years later. The Gospel is what every Christian embraces because the main message of it is that God has forgiven our sins on the blood of Jesus. I can tell you more of what that means if you need it.

Section 7 Acts
This one book called "Acts" was written by Luke and they tell how the church spread the good news of forgiveness to the world. It starts with the disciples meeting with the resurrected Jesus as He stayed with them for 40 days until He returned to Heaven. This book is also where Paul comes into play. Paul is the powerhouse of Christians. He wrote half of the New Testament!

Section 8: Paul's letters
Paul took many trips to different cities and established churches in them. These letters were written to the churches when they had questions about certain things. There are also letters written to specific people containing God's desire for many aspects of life. Paul wrote many of these while in prison. They locked him up because he would not stop preaching the Gospel.

Section 9 Epistles
Several more books written by many people who had received Godly instruction.

Section 10. Revelation
This book was given to John when he was in exile on the island of Patmos and was also put there because he would not stop preaching the good news. On Patmos, Jesus came to him and revealed to him what would happen to the people during the end times and what to look out for when that time comes. We are most definitely in the end times because prophesies in this book along with prophesies in the gospels are coming true more and more rapidly. If I were to guess, I would say that it would happen in the next 10-15 years. At the end of this book, Jesus reassures that surely He is coming Soon. We must always be prepared for it.

*Phew* that took a while. If there are any more questions, feel free to ask.

Also, this is a really good read and helps prove that the bible is true.

I'm not Christian, but I think I can help you out with these problems.

1. Most Christians believe that God has always existed. This link should help you work out your views philosophically. You might also be interested in the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Here is an excerpt from Summa Theologica.
2. The creation story is likely an allegory (they tend to have talking animals in allegories), and the snake a symbol.
3. The Bible has no one author. The books were written at different times by different authors. This should serve as a good jumping-off point for looking into the history of the Bible. It's not really my area of expertise, so I can't help you much with the history of the Bible.

This should help you figure out which religion best matches your beliefs, and this should help you figure out which Christian denomination best matches your beliefs.

Good luck.

Nothing like tying my hands eh?

Asking for proof of God and not accepting His book as a source.

Well, I'll give it a go.

Hmm..perhaps I should tackle question 3 first. This is easy. With the exception of the book of Hebrews, authorship of the Bible is common knowlege and well documented outiside the Bible. There is a wealth of information on this subject. Quickly, Moses wrote the first 5 books. Various people wrote more of the OT books including King David, King Solomon and many prophets. The first four NT books are named after their authors, as are several later ones. Most were apostles of Christ, several letters by Jesus' brothers and an letter to the Hebrews of uncertain authorship. The Apostle Paul wrote the 13 books starting at Romans. Luke, a physician and historian wrote Luke and Acts (and possibly Hebrews).

Now to go any further, you need to decide whether the Bible is true. Honestly, your questions cannot be answered any further without it.

Let me answer the questions first and we'll go from there.

Your first question. How did God come about. Well, He didn't. God is eternal. He has no beginning or ending. There are, of course NO extrabiblical sources for this. We only know this much from the book He inspired.

A talking snake is the least of the miraculous things. If you come to accept the Bible you will be dealing with far more than that. BTW, the snake is Satan.

The rest of the answer to question three is that God inspired the whole Bible.

Now why should you believe that? Well, let's start with manuscript evidence. There is more manuscrpt evidence to prove the Bible as we have it is accurate to the original than with other books from the same era that we tend not to question such as historical records etc. Thousands of manuscripts and fragments exist and they all have a remarkably high level of agreement between them and our current versions. That proves that the Bible today is what was written in the first place. But not that it is true.

For that, take historical control if you will. Paul made some big claims in the midst of several cultures that wanted to stamp out Christianity. His claims were made to large groups and were verifyable by hundreds of witnesses. If he had been lying about Christ's life, death or resurrection, hundreds of people could have proved him wrong. The eyewitnesses were still alive. He was not making wild claims without some controls on what he could get away with. Many of the events of Jesus' time are in fact recorded in secular history.

Next, take into account the resurrection itself. The Jews and the Romans wanted nothing more than to disprove the resurrection of Jesus. Christianity cannot be if Jesus was not raised from the dead. So the, if Chirst was not raised, why have the enemies of the faith not provided us with his body? The tomb was in land under their control. The Christians, few and disheartened were powerless at the time. They say the Christians must have stolen the body and hidden it, but lets think about the radical change in the Apostles who would have had to do this.

These men thought that the Messiah (or the Chirst) would come as a conquering King, overthrowing the Romans and restoring Israel. Upon His death, they went away dejected feeling they must have been mistaken saying to each other that they thought He was the One. Not only that, but the authorities were rounding up followers of Jesus to get rid of them so these men were in hiding for their lives, weak and afraid. Then, all of a sudden, they got news of the resurrection. They went from hiding to proclaiming the Gospel in hostile country. Their lives were in constant danger and indeed they all ended up martyred except for John who was banished to an Island. They never amassed any wealth or power. Now if they made it all up, what explains their willingness to sacrifice themselves, live under persecution and get no reward? Their actions can only be explained by the fact that they were proclaiming the truth.

I see this as proof of the resurrection of Christ, which in turn proves the Divinity of Christ. hen you have the fact that Christ Himself authenticated scripture and you have a compelling reason to believe in the Bible.

This is far from an exhaustive study on the evidence supporting the Bible. And interestingly, that Bible has not been disproven in 2000 years of ardent effort by it's opposition. No claim against the Bible has gone unanswered.

1 How did God come about?
Um, the concept of God? Look around. There's you. Then there's "not you". Both of them are caused by something else. And neither of them is really the cause of either of them.

But things don't pop into existence outta thin air. Must be a First Cause somewhere that isn't caused.
2 How is there a talking snake?
Not sure why you're worried about that. How is there a talking bird? Why would we demand that the snake communicate in human language? I don't see the point of dealing with this issue if you have issues with the Bible itself.
3 Who wrote the bible?
Who wrote it down? People. Why would you care to identify people you don't know? They'll be "People I didn't know -- except through what they wrote."
