  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I am looking to buy a new camera...I have up to $700 to spend on it. I'm thinking the Canon Digital Rebel XTi is the best way to go...but wanted to get some opinions on it. Also, I'm wondering where I can find a lens that does this effect? http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1228/1467982977_668b1e6c51.jpg

The lens is a very short focal length one, also called an extreme/ultra wide angle or fish eye lens. The shorter the focal length, the more pronounced the barrel distortion. A high quality lens is pretty expensive, so if you only use it occasionally and keep the enlargement small, a speciality filter or cheapie lens might be OK.

This site has a review on the Zenitar lens with links to a filter review and another review of the lens.

Any new digital SLR you get will be a very good camera, and either Nikon or Canon will provide you with a complete photographic system. My advice would be to go to a store and see how you like the feel and controls of several models.

Not all ultrawide angle lenses are fisheye; many are rectilinear. You can get both kinds for the same focal length. (Except for the most extreme short end, where only fisheyes are possible.)

I have to completely agree here. I started with a Canon Rebel G so the XT was the only choice I had (though up until this one came out, I pretty much hated digital lol). My lenses I already had were completely compatible and I was already pretty comfortable with the system itself. The Canon/Nikon war can get pretty heated but no one is really right or wrong. You just have to go with what you're comfortable with :) Good luck!

The XTi is a great starter camera. I have an XT with a few extras myself. Canon has a fantastic selection of lenses, and they're all compatible with the EOS series (minus EF-S lenses on the high end full frame sensor ones), so you would be able to keep using whatever lenses you have if you upgrade to a nicer camera. The price of the XTi actually dropped recently, and will likely be dropping some more since a new Rebel camera should be coming out near the beginning of next year.

EBay is your best bet for getting everything you need to start. There's quite a few sellers who sell kits with a CF card and other things that are good to have when you start. Just be sure you choose a reputable seller.

Other than EBay, www.bhphotovideo.com, www.buydig.com, and www.amazon.com are all great sites for camera gear. Just avoid places like Best Buy if you don't wanna spend way more than you have to.

Also, check out www.photography-on-the.net/forum. It's a Canon forum and you can get a lot of helpful advice and info there.

Well howdy doody thats the forum I visit as well, I will echo what Danc has said it is a great forum for photographers and the vast majority of users are happy to give as much help as they can. As to teh Xti it is a good camera capable of great results. The most important thing in photography though is practice..........the more you get out and experiment, the better you will get.

Sweet. What's your name on there? POTN has been really awesome to learn from. People there seem more willing to help than DPReview or FredMiranda forums.

www.beachcamera.com is another great place to purchase from, at least from my experience. I've bought quite a bit of equipment from them and have been very satisfied.

Anywhere you buy from, check them out first on www.resellerratings.com.

The Rebel Xti and the Nikon D40 are both great models in your price range. Your best bet is to go, feel them in your hands, test them out and see which you like best. You'll quickly discover if you're a Canon lover or a Nikon lover. :) You really won't go wrong with either brand. Although...my vote is for the Canon. ;)
