The next day, Chief Brighton calls Brenda and Nadia into the office.
"Lim, Marshall, I should fire you both. Smith's lawyer just called us. He's suing for false arrest and slander."
"But we were sure, that was where-"
"No excuses. Now, find whoever gave Hatano the note in the first place. This looks like misdirection."
"Sir, I think we'd best ignore the media leads and find our own."
Chief Brighton smiles. "Nonsense. The more I talked to that young man, I wondered why the Osaka Police Department missed recruiting him 10 years ago. He would have made a great cop."
"Yeah, if-"
"I will fire you both if you don't chase that lead down. Start looking for an alias called 'M'."
"Yes, sir."
Chief Brighton steps to the door a few minutes after they leave. Seeing no one, he moves to his personal locker in the room. He pulls out two items: a golden poodle statue and a new digital camera. He uses the cell phone in the bag to call someone. "T. Is that you?" "Yeah, it's me. Will-" "W to you. Come over here quick. I got your week's pay. So you don't have to talk." "W, then. Thanks much and be sure to have next week's." "yes." stroke of genius, Will. No. . .maybe luck. Marshall, Lim, those secret agents, and Hatano are smart. I will give them that. but as long as I have them all on wild-goose chases, first Smith, now this "M" guy. . .none other than me, ha.
