True or False?

The Council of Ephesus in 431 condemned the teachings of Nestorius, the patriarch of Constantinople. Nestorius asserted that Mary was the mother of Christ but not the mother of God.

If true, what effect do you think this had on the eventual splitting of East and West?

True. Nestorius found the thought of God needing His nappy changed repugnant.

Lend me a hand here please. What effect do you think this had. I'm assuming you already have some thoughts on the matter or you wouldn't ask the question (I'm afraid the question never occured to me) so please feel free to share them.

I'm not really sure if this particular issue caused any serious rift betwen the East and West. I think another issue prevalent in this same period is more to blame for the rift and that was several of Augustine's unique teachings which the East rejected.

John.

Reminds me of some of the more vocal Nestorians over at TBBTSNBN (Those were the days ...)

I used the term nappy :) the other day (with Anna soon to arrive and all) and was met with blank stares by my fellow Orthodox missionaries. I 'splained that a nappy was what we in the States call a diaper :) BTW, I like nappy better, I think I will see if I can interject a bit of Australian vernacular into the Deep South ;)

I think that is was the beginning of the bad feelings between East and West and that event, combined with some other heresies of the East being put down by the West, contributed to the eventual formal break in 1054.

It might be worthwhile to look into who were the champions of Orthodoxy in relation to those heresies. I gained the impression that the heresies in the East were put down by the East, not by the West. I could be wrong though.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia...

The idea of this great council seems to have been due to Nestorius, the Bishop of Constantinople. St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria, had accused him to Pope St. Celestine of heresy, and the pope had replied on 11 August, 430, by charging St. Cyril to assume his authority and give notice in his name to Nestorius that, unless he recanted within ten days of receiving this ultimatum, he was to consider himself excommunicated and deposed.

So Cyril would be one such "champion of Othodoxy" that you mentioned... but notice how it was the Pope that was appealed to...

Perhaps, in the Catholic opinion.

Please remember that this forum is not for debating East vs. West issues, especially the place of the Patriarch of Rome in Orthodox Christianity.

Thanks
