  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been playing keyboards at my Church's 12:00 mass on and off for several years now (depending on my work schedule). My partner Toby and I have a straightfoward relationship when it comes to doing music at mass: she sings, I play and keep my mouth totally closed to avoid offending people with the horridness of my singing voice.

Now, the traditional choir's leader is retiring her position, and the post is coming up. Toby and I are considering applying to replace her, but as a two-person team instead of a solo, since she can't play the organ and I can't sing.

I'd like some advice from other Catholic music ministers on how we should make our proposal for the position. We have to present a proposal, but we're not sure exactly how to do it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Borealis,

My mom was a song leader in the Catholic church for 25 years I will ask her to reply to you...

OK I asked my mom and she said the best thing to do is to go and talk to the Pastor of your parish directly. Explain to him basically what you have said here and tell him you are open to ideas and suggestions. She said this is how she always handled situations like this. She also said pray for God's will in the matter before you talk to the priest. I am sorry we couldn't be of more help.
