  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I am currently waiting for an interview for an Access course at my local college and they need to see a recent portfolio of work. Now last year I had no problems. At the time I was coming out of a depression and some how ideas came to me quickly.

However, now I have a job and started a exercise program and I feel great but I not to sure what to do I have so many ideas that I cannot seem to pick on or make it work. I have seemed to have hit a an artistic brick wall. I have looked on the internet for some inspiration but I finding that I am falling back on things I have done before. I need something new and maybe from other fellow artists. Also does anyone know of any Christian artists I could look at at all? Thanks for your help.

SnazzArt87:

Try jewelry patters; these are always popular.

(They can even be applied thematically to a Bible theme; in Ezekiel 16 the Lord gives earrings and a nose ring to Zion, for example.)

Why not just do what you are good at.

I paint sometimes, and many say I should paint more, but for me I have to be inspired, then I paint like it was nothing at all.

At school I can say I learned zero, and yet I took first prize in art, but it was nothing I learned.

Is the interview over yet?
Just a clue on what they're looking for -- usually ...

- Skill in representational drawing (volume, shading)
- Conceptual approaches -- thinking not just outside the box, but expressing your ideas visually.
- Craftsmanship/neatness, respect for materials
- A unique voice-- even if you work in a lot of media, work should have a common thread that distinguishes it as yours
- Ability to communicate your goals and focus in a gallery-like way.

Try not to include anything that's weak, or you're not comfortable with. Negative things will stick out, so just leave them at home. (Like oops I spilled coffee on that one.)

Think about the program -- what they will ask students to work on (animation, painting, wood sculpture, ceramics etc.). The faculty reviewing your work will be focused in those areas, so will look for certain related things. Like a drawing teacher might look at jewelry and say, "She needs more pictures of hands."

If this advice is too late, then how did your interview go?
