  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I guess that makes two of us......my church is still looking and have been through 4 youth pastors in 2 years.

This is the sad part of Youth Ministry. Depending on the statistics you look at - the average time that a youth pastor is at a church is between 6 months and a year. THAT IS SAD! NO THAT IS WRONG!

That short of a time does not build into the lives of young people one of the things that alot of them need - STABILITY.

Sorry for rambling. Just a pet peeve of mine.

i'll be praying for all you guys - i understand what you are going through, our church lost about 5 youth leaders in 3 years and its really a bummer,

our pastor ended up taking over, until a little over a year ago i became too old to attend the youth group as a kid, so he asked me if i wanted to become a leader, so now i am and its really a blessing, i don't know if you're guys' church would allow something like that (i guess most churches pay "professionals" with experience and stuff like that) but if they would i would suggest it, because with me personally i grew up with all of these kids in my life, so its like i have a personal attachment to my youth group and i plan to help out with it as long as they want me there, plus before i started i already knew the kids so i had an idea of how to teach toward what they would want to hear

anyways just keep praying and have patience

You know, I'm convinced that a church shouldn't even have a paid youth pastor unless the group is well over 100. It's every church's concept that a part timer on the payroll shows they care for kids. I think they need to pump the money into a budget and have a team of adult/youth leaders to head things up.

I was a youth sponsor for 3 years before I was in a paid position. 2 of those years were spent as a volunteer coordinator at a church. The city I was in also had a connection of youth pastors and a few times a year we would do stuff, all our youth groups together such as a See You at the Pole Rally. I'm convinced that unity and teamwork works.

Taking that concept, I formulated a cooporative in the small town I was hired in between several churches to have a regular youth meeting. We visioned what we wanted the program to look like, ie: One Sunday evening we might do a service project, the next we'd have small group discussion, the next tackle a controvercial topic, and usually have a Funday Sunday. Churches rotated the food responsibilities, the baptist youth pastor had a spiritual gift of teaching, so he led discussions, I led/coordinated the team and music, others had various responsibilities, and I left it in good condition because I was close to graduating, but it more or less ran itself once the leadership was in place and not dependant on one person.

Christ intended us to work together. One of his last prayers was for the unity of His church. Keep in mind that, and you may well find your youth minister in eachother.

Blessings...

my grade used to joke that we drove away youth leaders, because we never had one stay for more than a year from grades 7-11. then in the spring of my junior year, we hired a new youth leader for high school and he's still there and i'm a frosh in college. yay! just wanted to encourage you that it WILL get better. stay with your same church if you feel that god is leading you to do so--you can make a difference especially if you are a strong christian. even the quiet (like me) can be good leaders and important in keeping the group together during the tough times.
and i have to disagree with OnceDust. you cannot be your own youth pastors. youth pastors have so much to offer, so much more expierence than an 18 year old kid. i know this somewhat contradicts myself, but my youth group has between 50-80 regular attenders and there's no way we could effectively minister to each other. we can lead--some can be worship leaders, some can lead small groups for the younger grades or for younger believers, but then who does that leave to minister to the older christians and the older students, espically on issues such as college choices that no one in the youth group has any real expierence with until they embark on that journey themselves. youth pastors are there as counslors, advisors, teachers, communication between the kids and the adults, friends, and so much more. these are lasting, vital relationships. i talk to my old youth pastors about things i wouldn't bring up with the head pastor of my church just because of generational differences. if my youth group never had real leaders, real adults who were trained to do youth ministry, even in the times of no "true, permanent" leader, chaos would have ensued and i would not be the person i am today if i had been led entirely by my peers. some peer leading is good, but others who have gone this road before you need to be involved. :)
