Gentlemen,
I will have to agree with 'seabe's first statement (the last portion anyway).
I had considerable problems with porn and masturbation (some of this was due to a messed up marriage) and I can say with much honesty that I had several encounters with the manifestation of the Holy Spirit during all of this stupid stuff.
Questions poured through my mind, such as; I pursue God determinedly by constant reading of His Word, prayer, and praying long periods in the Spirit. So why do I quickly cave in at the mere thought of a well visited sex site? I get my kicks then end up begging for forgiveness. What is up with this stuff?
Your quickened spirit will always war against the flesh. Until you become quite mature in the spirit, your fleshly tendencies will assert itself as 'commander-in-chief' over the affairs that it deems as good.
Apostle Paul asked for this thorn to be removed, because when he wanted to do good, he did bad. (Romans and Corinthians). Jesus finally told Paul that His grace (mercy) was sufficient enough. God has said that the victory will not be won by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit. (This last portion drove me nuts for some time).
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood..." If this is true, then how do you defeat an enemy that you don't see, but that is still you? or, what causes me to do the things I wont not to do? It is the things in the high places. Where's that? It is in your mind. Better to say that your mind is where the battle takes place. David defeated his giants with God's Word, so you and I must do the same. Give the enemy no grounds to enter into a place that is venerable to attack.
Your weapons are spirit, not natural. You must suffer as Jesus suffered (1Peter 1:4). Start fasting. What ever hurts your flesh (adamic nature)(you'll know 'cause it'll scream for food and sugars) and prayer and worship!
Also while prayer and worship are essential, do not forget that Jesus is your strength! You must read and meditate as much as possible. You are really going to understand that you are a co-laborer with the Anointing (Christ), not just a benefactor. You see, it is all about His "finished work."
He has done all He is ever going to do in terms of the Spirit. Now we as individuals must appropriate His promises by doing the Word. Look! It ain't gonna be easy. Overcoming that is. God has said that He will never fail us. But having said that, you have to remember the one 'golden rule' of an overcomer: Don't ever quit! Ever read Numbers chapter 6, dealing with the
vow of the Nazarite? Should you fail to accomplish your goal, start over and try again! Don't be foolhardy like Sampson and think more highly of yourself than you ought to. But then look at Sampson's end results! He overcame!
You will to, Brother!
