• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What??? I wonder how someone could reject God's free gift of salvation through faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
I'm not rejecting God's gift at all but everyone even the faithful has to examine their beliefs and expand their knowledge from time to time.

Yes but it is important to be able to examine ones beliefs and make sure they line up with reality.
Where do you put your boundary though?

Reality comes in different shapes:

Science = the physical realm only = that which can be measured and quantified empirically

Theology = the physical realm + the supernatural realm

Which one do you subscribe to?

The Exodus is a good example.

Who sent the ten plagues? Mother Nature? or God?

How you answer that will affect your mindset on life.

What drives many of us on is an insatiable thirst for knowledge and knowing the enormous amount we don’t know. We are all on that journey.

So well done for taking another step along the road.
It’s the ones who think they have an explanation for it all, that are deluded!

But the problem with knowledge is knowing where to start..
There’s only one way to eat an elephant : one bite at a time.

I have three pieces of advice,
1/ Just for yourself, frame one specific question, I would love to know why XYZ . Write a list and keep adding to it, but focus on one at a time.
2/ if it’s in any way controversial - politics, religion, origin of life
Don’t look at wiki. What you will find is opinions dressed up as truth.
3/ however convincing an answer seems, don’t take the first persons word for it!

After hanging around the science and evolution threads for sometime I realize I really don't know all that much about anything. I'm not satisfied with being ignorant and I want to do something about it but I don't know where to start.
Being on here and the general philosophy threads made me realize that I'm too bias ignorant and my logic and justifications and arguments are weak.
I'm not proud to admit this but instead of staying narrow minded and remaining as I am I want to challenge my beliefs and preconceive notions and maybe learn something.
Anyone know any resources I can use to learn ?

Here's a good introduction to some common logical fallacies:

There's 40 in total.

To learn the basics of evolution, here's an excellent podcast. I recommend you set it to sort from "oldest" so it's easier to listen to them in order. Evolution 101 podcast

There are also many flawed claims that creationists make. Here is a list of many of them. Each entry is rather short, so you can just click on the first one and use the "next" button to keep going. An Index to Creationist Claims

Which questions are you wanting to ask?
If you go back to the beginning, God explains a general knowledge of it.
If you want a more "science-y" explanation of our universe and the beginning there is a good video to watch. It is long at 1hr 20 minutes but is a lecture given by Dr. Jason Lisle. Think of it as a God/Science college class.
Title: Secrets of the Cosmos Confirm the Bible - Dr. Jason Lisle.
5 Proofs For the Existence of God
5 Proofs For God's Existence which persuaded a prominent atheist
Once you know where everything started, everything else starts to fall into place.
We didn't "evolve" from poo flinging monkeys or soup. Life did not come from non-life as "they" think it does.

The arguments presented there are ones I've seen debunked many times. I'd be happy to have a discussion about them, but I fear it would derail this thread. If you are amenable to having a discussion about the points raised in that site, I'll be happy to start a thread for it.

Well, let me first congratulate you for your wish to learn stuff, to improve. And admire you for being so open about it and seek help. That is quite refreshing. And don’t be fooled, there will always be more subjects we are ignorant about than subjects we are knowledgeable. Most of us just don’t admit it publicly.
Depending on your current level of knowledge and on the effort you want to invest in your journey the suitable material will differ.
There are a few very good Youtube channels and series that have excellent material. Hank and John Green run a very good channel for these, they have a whole set of series called crash course… that are very good and funny introductions to the subject treated.
For philosophy, here is the link to the first episode of a crash course:
First of their crash course biology:
There are other educational Youtube channels too. (Sabine Hossenfelder, Veritaserum, Kurzgesagt, etc).
If you are more inclined to books, there are plenty of websites that offer free pdf’s or other formats. Complete college level textbooks can be downloaded for free.
PDF Drive - Search and download PDF files for free.
Science Books Online
LibreTexts - Free The Textbook
There are also plenty of websites that publish the latest news of research in an accessible level for the dedicated layman.
Sciencedaily.com
Scitechdaily.com
Sci-news.com
There are probably more.

If you are an Evolutionist, you want strong internal consistency, in the words you study.

If you are a Christian, you want strong internal consistency, in what you are commanded to do.

Either way, the words of Jesus have strong internal consistency, which Jesus does not condemn you on if you fail to study or obey them correctly.
