  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I am in the market for a new study bible. I would like one in the NAS version. I would love to go into Lifeway and just browse for a few hours, but I want to do so with some feedback from likeminded individuals (I am a conservative Christian). Which ones do you guys like and why? Thanks so much for your help.

The bibles I use the most (for study) are NIV, Message, NKJV... using the KJV primarily for it's poetic style.

To be frank, I've moved from paper to computer. I have a 10 bible disc... and another 5 or 6 reference books. Only prob is, I can't write in the margines.

I also find Young's Literal and Bible in Basic English helpful, tho I don't use them a lot.

Happy studys!

I use the Thomas Nelson Side Margin Reference bible - NASB.

It is wide-margined to accept notes.

Personally, I prefer NOT to use a study bible, preferring instead to have an NAS exhaustive concordance. Reason for this is simply that I like an "unadulterated" Bible - merely meaning that I prefer my commentaries separate from my Bible.

Don't get me wrong! - ("adulterated" was probably too harsh a word) MacArther, Ryrie, et. al. are all VERY worthy commenters - I just prefer a "clean" Bible without human comments - except of course for my own notes, ha! ;)

NASB - almost universally accepted as the most accurate english translation, which is why I like it - particularly over what are now so very popular "paraphrase" versions of the Bible (too many to list).

In addition to the NASB Bible, I recommend for enhanced study:
  • Strong's NASB Exhaustive Concordance (a MUST!)
  • Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words (Good for Word Studies)
  • Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon (Dictionary) of the New Testament (cross-referenced to Strong's numbering system)
  • Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament (cross-referenced to Strong's numbering system)
  • Nave's Topical Bible (Good for Topical Studies)
  • A Good Illustrated Bible Dictionary
  • A trusted set of Bible Commentaries (can't have too many of these!)
I've others - but I consider the above very important.

Holler if questions! Be glad to help or answer any questions you might have!

In Him,

NKJV Thompson Chain Reference~instead of limiting commentary from whatever theologian/denomination it uses scripture itself to explain~all sorts of words and happenings linked together+tons of reference info

Great way to study the bible without "theological spin";)

Reformation Study Bible is an excellent study Bible. It is currently available in either NKJV or ESV. I love the NASB too and sadly this isn't available in that translation - but I think the NKJV is pretty close. My church uses the NASB as their pulpit translation - I don't find much difference when reading along.

Also very good (and very similar) is the New Geneva Study Bible (also NKJV).

HEY!  I use the New Geneva Study Bible!! I found out RC Sproul was involved with that and ran out got me & my husband one.
I love it! (altho I have to admit, I view the prophecy verses a little different than that bible offers).
But it's a fantastic bible.

There's another member, Zechryphon - He uses an archaeological study bible that he just loves - it's got lots of extra info & images/maps. Let me find that one out for you.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I am going to try to go looking some this weekend. It may take me a while to make up my mind, though. I don't want to purchase something that will just sit on the shelf. I have been guilty of that before. :sorry:

Well it's not the only one I have, just one that hasn't been cracked open in years~tell ya what, in the spirit of ecumenism I will send that bible to you or your church, and you being a good calvinist can be responsible in finding it a good home somewhere, only cost for ya is a PM with a mailing address.

 I just picked it up and boy is it dusty~there's a couple of notes in the blank pages in back and that's about it~I'll even clean off the dust for ya;)
